Ickenham has retained a pleasant village atmosphere, despite some unfortunate modern building. The parish church dates back to the 14th century, with 16th-century additions from when the simple old building was enlarged.

Must have been 1962 when I was confirmed at St Giles. We have an old super 8 film of us coming out of church, boys smartly dressed, girls veiled, some wore uniforms. We had had confirmation classes before with a young padre - wish I could remember names - he liked baked beans and had a dog! We moved to Ickenham in early 1960s and attended the parish church of St Giles. It is a very old church, once belonging to the estate of Swakeleys House, and is on the corner of a very busy T junction, but when inside it is very quiet and peaceful with memorials to the Vyners family on the walls. We lived in a charming little bungalow in, I think it was called, Parkfield Avenue, a little cul-de-sac with a footpath that led to a golf course. Going out of the cul-de-sac the other way and then going right towards Swakeleys Road. We used to go shopping there. My son was christened in this lovely church in 1991. I was married in a lovely old church, St. Marys, when I lived nearby in Northolt and was pleased to find another lovely old church in Ickenham, when I moved here in 1989.
