Hertfordshire memories
Personally I don't have a memory of the Sun Hotel, but my late mother told me once that she thought her father's family either owned or ran the hotel. Their name was Taylor and they came from Hitchen and the surrounding area.

Our grandparents used to visit Halsey's weekly from Old Stevenage to buy their provisions. Now I with my sister visit regularly especially as we love the new owners' Kirsty and Damien's Tea Room. The road is called Queen Street and shows St Mary's Square on the left where the market was held on Tuesday and Saturday every week. Beyond that is Portmill Lane and the back of shops and offices at the top of Hermitage Road. On the immediate right is the Telephone Exchange.

The white-haired man in the photograph, I believe, is my father John Neville. He was a police sergeant in Hitchin from 1941 until his retirement in the late '50s.

The lady in the centre of the photograph walking towards the camera is Mrs Kate Silsby my grandmother who lived at 8 Tilehouse Street. When this was taken we think she would have been walking to St Ippollytts to visit her daughter Mrs Babs Brown.

I lived in Birds Hill (the start of Works Road) just opposite Howard Park. The paddling pool was always emptied at the end of summer but just enough water remained in to make for great slides during winter when the water froze.

Spreading cedar trees frame this southern aspect of St Katherine's Church, with its Early English tower with a weathervane, stuccoed walls and Norman nave. Sir George C Scott carefully restored the building in 1859.

The centre of this straggling village on the outskirts of Hitchin boasted two public houses beside the Green and across the road from the cedars and prominent yew tree in St Katherine's chuchyard. The half-timbered Old George Inn was partly built during the 16th century. On the extreme left is The Green Man, serving Benskin's Ales.

Two miles north of Hitchin lies Ickleford, where the Roman Icknield way crosses the confluence of the Rivers Hiz and Oughton. The bridge was built to replace the ford in the early part of the 19th century. It is said that the abbot of St Albans held his local court in an upper room of the George Inn next to the... [more]
