Growing Up In Ilford

A Memory of Ilford.

I was born down Roman Road Ilford sadly as long ado as 1947 but life in Ilford was good. Went to Mount Secondary School but left at the age of 14 and started work as a jnr legal secretary in a firm in Cranbrook Road. It was so great then could get on a train and be in Liverpool Street in 20 mins an shop till we dropped. I started going to the Palais at 17 and loved it. It wa the place to go for a good night out. No probs with buses home could walk it had no worries back then about being attacked. The 60s was an iconic time and I feel privileged that I had the chance to spend my single years during that time. A club calledOscars opened just on the edge of Ilford more Manor Park and that was great but all the fellas there were from East and West Ham and about and said we were country girls because we had green buses. I just loved it all and they were such good times. We just danced our nights away.

I went to Uphall Junior School (1955 to 1958) which was on the ground floor of the Mount Secondary School building. However I don't recall ever seeing any girls from Mount. You must have had an entrance at one end or round the side. We lived in Ilford Lane opposite the flats and next to Sid's Wood Yard so it was a two minute walk to school. When I left Beal School to go to work I also travelled to the City using the 9.00am from the bay platform which only stopped at Stratford and got me to Liverpool Street just in time to get to work for the 9.30am start. We moved to Wickford in 1964 so I never knew the pleasures of Oscars !
