Memories of Ilford, the High Road and Old Houses c1965
My father and grandfather, Henry Reeve and Frank Jobson, owned the newsagent facing the main Valentine's Park Gates. I was born 1968, in the bedroom above, and arrived with the newspapers. I spent such a great childhood residing in lford and sadly had to leave 1979 when the lease could not be renewed, as the buildings were being demolished. But very happy memories I still hold close to my heart.
I lived opposite the Rose & Crown pub in the old 3 storey victorian houses, they were demolished years ago but I clearly remember looking out of my bedroom window at chucking out time and laughing at the 'drunk' people staggering down the road - I was around 3-4years old then. As a treat on a Saturday and if my dad was lucky on the 'horses' my dad used to take us for a milkshake in the Rainbow Cafe near the Pioneer Mkt. Happy memories
Memories of Ilford
I remember like it was yesterday, I went to Highlands school from1961/ 1968, my name is Paul Cahn, my best friend was Jeff Lobel, we are still best mates today, some 50 odd years later.
I remember the H-G fire well. I was sixteen at the time and was on my way home from evening classes at the South West Essex Tech, as it was called in those days, in Longbridge Road Barking. I remember Ilord townhall we used to go dancing (ballroom) every saturday night that is when we had live bands.I lived in hainault does any body remember going dancing at ilford townhall.I now live in herfordshire.arnold.
Born wells gardens 1952 grew up in and around ilford until 1976 my friend Peter still lives on Balfour road. How times have change the buses ran on electricity, no supermarkets. Going to ilford shops with my mother to do the weekly shop. Does anybody remember the greengrocer that drove around in a lorry that was his shop, you don't see the now.
