Trip to Alloa
My ancestors were from Alloa and surrounding areas. They lived there for many years, back to the 1600s. I was finally able to visit Alloa this June after years of waiting. It was a beautiful summer morning and so green. The people were friendly to us. The feeling of it will be cherished in my heart, for so many of my people were born and raised there and worked so hard before coming to America in the 1870s. It was fun to eat the food, smell the freshness, and see the cattle and sheep. The mountains were beautiful, and the houses charming. Age will not allow me to come again, but I will remember forever.
If Only
I lived at 24 Newbiggen Crescent for quite a few years. In my family there was 10 girls and 4 boys, yes 14 children, and my parents. We spent many hours playing in the wood at the bottom of our garden which unfortunately has almost all vanished, on my last visit I was shocked at the change. I last visited in 2009 and it left me very moved. My maiden name was Ward and I would be thrilled to hear from anyone of that era.
Childhood
I was born and brought up in 14 Main Street, Cambus, then we moved to 2 Main Street. I remember Betty, Anna & Jean Keir. Peggy Young and then Pat Ferguson had the wee pub. Andrew Rennie had the farm. We used to go for walks along the Hennan Road and along the Devon Place. I have a sister and brother. My mum was Margaret Horn (nee Harley) my granny and grandpaw were Christina and Robert (Bob) Harley. Does anybody remember me?
Miners
seems likea "million" years ago, but I was ( 6 yrs ) old and remember at holiday fridays, standing with a few other kids outside the pit-baths at the devon pit, asking miners if we could take their bags "pit clothes" home for them, and get a tip...
thrupenny bit, was a lot back then.
When we Were Kids
When we were kids in Fishcross we used to go fishing most weekends, play in the woods, go to the Dam, climb and fish the Ochill Hills, Tooks Pond for eggs, go to the pictures etc. I knocked about with Charlie and John Bradley, Big Jack Bolton, Breck's Bolton, John and Sammy Mcmillan, Jerry Fitzpatrick etc. The people I remember for a laugh were William Joseph Hunter (Cocky Joe) who used to put the coal in the houses for something to eat. And Willie (the Gut ) who rode around Alloa on his bike doing wheelies.
We had some great times - memories never to be forgotten.
The very best to all who read this.
William Speirs.
Bicycle Accidents Near Fishcross
Has there ever been any serious Bicycle accidents near Collyland Road? I overtook a cyclist as I was approaching Fishcross from Tullibody as I passed the Cyclist I looked over my shoulder too see if it was safe for me to pull in but there was no Cyclist there? I was thinking I've seen a ghost of a cyclist? Anyone help?
Fishcross
I left Fishcross in September 1962. I was part of the MacKay clan way back when everyone knew everyone. I had a friend across from where I lived at 2 Alloa Road, her name was Catherine Logan. My brother Ken (Kye) had a pal Michael Finnan who now lives in our old house. My sister Moira and Ken have seen Cokey Joe at his old farmhouse in his bath singing, outside, with his boots still on legs hanging over the edge. He used to help with the coal delivery in exchange for a bowl of tea and a piece and jam. I remember getting crisps handed over the wall at play time in the playground of Fishcross school. There's a lot I do remember. My grandparents Maggie and Kenny McKay lived at 21 Lawswell,. My son is currently in Scotland and will be visiting my village on the 11th then heading to Sauchie to visit my family. I'm so proud Adam has gone to check his roots, his grandparents Donald...
