Lived Here in 1963-64
My dad was stationed here in the early 60's with the US Navy. Although I was only 5 years old at the time the memories are still so vivid in my mind. So many thoughts and pictures are racing thru my mind as I write this that it is hard to put it all into words. I can see the big stone house (JOPPA) that we lived in, I smell the multitude of geraniums that thrived in the hot house connected to the main house, I feel the sun and fresh cool air that my brother and I thrived in as we would walk to school or to town and talk with all the shop keepers or play on the rocks at the river Clyde. I see old Mr Burns tending the roses that lined the walkway from the street to our front door. I remember the night that there was a terrible storm and I woke up sleepy-eyed and confused to see strangers in our living room as my father and a friend had helped to rescue them from a boat that had been wrecked during the storm. And how can I begin to describe the fun my whole family had when we would go visit our neighbors Mr and Mrs Welch.
Often times I pull out the pictures my parents took while we lived there and my school papers my mother had the foresight to keep and I stroll down memory lane and it only fuels my constant desire to return for a visit. It was always my wish to take my parents back for a visit but they are both gone now, so who knows, maybe they are once again strolling hand in hand in the wonderful little town of Innellan that they both loved and brought them such happy times and wonderful memories.

Hi Theresa. I wasn't in Innellan at the time you were there, but we moved there in 1974, into the house called Labrador that was next door to Joppa. It was the house that looked the same.
The 2 houses were built from the same plans by 2 friends who retired there in the 1800's. One had made his fortune in the coalmining industry in a village called Joppa near Ayr in Scotland. The other had made his money in fishing of the coast of Labrador, Canad.........hence the names.
I went to school in Dunoon and left the area in 1995. I still go back for a visit occasionally and it really doesn't change too much. There has, however, been a large storm drain housing that has been built on the grass verge across from Joppa. They have completely removed all the rocks from the beach to accomodate it. It is such an eyesore!
We used to use Joppa Cottage as a 'den' to play in when we were kids. There was nobody living there at the time and it had fallen into a bit of disrepair.
Joppa was bought in the 1980's by a local builder who completely rennovated the place. It looked almost brand new! Labrador was similarly rennovated about 5 years ago.
I love Innellan and, if it wasn't so hard to get to work in Glasgow, I would be living there now.

I lived there in 1963 as well, on the second floor. Did your father happen to do leather work? My wife and I went back to see the old house in 2004 and the same neighbors still lived there. The house sadly has been torn down and replaced with a much smaller version of the same basic style. It was nice to see the old town but almost all of the shops are now closed in the village. If I remember correctly your dad also was a scuba diver. My mom and dad are still doing well and have nice memories of the area as well. Hope to hear from you. Dennis
