How Well I Remember The Buses on The Cornhill

I was born in 1956 and used to go to the town with my mum on the buses to town. She called them trolley buses but I can remember them stopping on the Cornhill ready to take us home again before they went to the electric house. My mum used to tell me off for touching the ladies' fur coats or their collars when I sat in the buses but I loved the feel of the fur. I also remember the conductors who had these ticket machines that gave out tickets which were green I believe for your money. I remember so much more about old Ipswich and yes those days were a lot safer than they are now.

RE: RE: How Well I Remember The Buses on The Cornhill

Yes Brenda, I too remember the old man under the Lloyds Avenue Bridge, and the wind when you got round the corner didn't half howl around your ears! I also remember an Ipswich that was perfectly safe to walk around late at night when I finished work in a nightclub and also Kentucky Fried Chicken. I loved the fact that not one person bothered me, sadly all too often I believe that has changed as have most places these days. There was community spirit where I was lived and everyone knew everyone, my how that has changed too and I wish sometimes we could all go back to that era because everyone would have a hell of a lot to learn about how people actually helped each other!

RE: RE: How Well I Remember The Buses on The Cornhill

I remember waiting in line for the bus to Whitehouse Estate. When you saw people standing on the bus you knew you had to wait for the next one. That was not good in freezing rain was it. Traffic was heavy going through town in the 1950s and 60s. Lots of people on bikes going home from work. I also remember the old man under Lloyds Avenue "bridge"selling the Evening Star. The wind whistled through there. I've seen pictures of Cornhill now. No traffic!
