The Paper Shop
The shop seen first on left was owned by a Mr.Mathews and was the new paper shop (newsagents) a handful of young boys including myself and a couple of girls used to deliver the newspapers on bicycles to the local community. The previous shop was more like an old shed. Irby was a lovely peaceful little village.

RE: RE: The Paper Shop
I too, delivered newspapers for Dickie Mathews, both from his old shed and the new shop. My route was Thingwall Road and Glenwood Drive. Steele's across the street, and next to the library (later Fish and Chip shop) also used to deliver newspapers I think. I was born in Irby in 1945 and I lived on Mill Hill Road leaving there in 1964 at 19 years of age, when I joined the Police Service. I did return for a couple of years in the early 70's, but was forced to sell the family home upon my divorce. I emigrated to the USA in 1983 and have lived here ever since. I was last in the Village in 2000 and was astounded when one of the ladies serving in the Pharmacy near to the Post Office recognised me immediately I walked in the door. I miss going to Caldy Rugby Club in the winter, as there is little or no rugby played at club level over here. Thank God for satellite TV - at least I can watch some games from time to time.
