BOOTS THE CHEMIST
I own part of the building which is the second one on the left of the photo. Many years ago there was another building on the end, on the corner of Market St and Well Lane. Our building is now the Fat Frog Cafe and lots of customers come in and tell us that our cafe used to be Boots. However, from some of the more recent photos we can see that the building which is now gone was Boots. We think that the Fat Frog (also previously The Heron Bar) used to be Home and Colonial. The Heron Bar was only part of the ground floor the other part being William Hills Bookmakers.
We are very interested in finding out more of the history of this area and would welcome any comments from people who remember Market St as it was.
Thanks
Lynda
Village Cricket
I lived in Plymouth at the time and our family spent two or three holidays in the village of Darite, the years would be around 1951-3. My father would organise a cricket game in the field where the Quoit stands, we would play three or four times a week and a lot of the local lads would join in. My mother would sit beneath on the base stones and do her knitting. Although it's over 50 years ago my sisters and I have many happy memories of this area.
School Sports Days at Liskeard
I grew up in Moorswater and went to Liskeard Sec. I have many great memories of my days there. I was lucky enough to be very successful at sport but my first taste of athletics will stay long in my memory. It took place at the interschool sports at Brickfields, I was in the junior boys 70 yards hurdles. The gun went and at the first hurdle I tripped and fell. Picking myself up, amazingly I still managed to finish second, I will always remember our headmaster Mr Andrews' beaming smile at the finish. I went on to represent East Cornwall at Par and without falling became county champion. How different things might have been if I hadn't got up and completed that first race. So no matter how bad it seems, never give up!
Liskeard Sports Days
I was brought up in Menheniot and attended Liskeard Secondary during the early to mid 1960s, my maiden name was Harris. Sports days were always a big event at the school and very well organised. How fantastic that you went on to represent the county. I think I just about remember you. Mr Andrews was a wonderful Headmaster, a mild and considerate man who really cared for his pupils' well-being. I remember when he announced his retirement, several children were crying in assembly. He went by the nickname of 'Archie' after the radio show 'Archie Andrews'!
Menheniot And Coldrenick House
Hi. I was born in 1950 so the above date should actually read 1950 - 1965+. My maternal grandparents lived at Coldrenick (not in the big house) but close by in one of 2 bungalows on the estate. I spent many happy times at Coldrenick and often visited the dowager Trelawney at Coldrenick House. I was so sad to see in later years that the house had been demolished. However. I am now compiling (or rather wracking my brains!) many years of memories as a PEARSE decendant at Coldrenick for a novel. There is much more I could share but for now it would be great to connect with others who perhaps were raised in the area. I also have very strong connection with Cawsand as I lived there for some years too. Perhaps someone on the site can help me 'fill in the gaps' of the Trelawneys? Or perhaps knew my grandparents, Hilda and Cecil Pearse and their children - my mother Patricia Hilda, my... Read more
My Childhood Summers in The Village
I was brought up near London but when I was about 8 my brother married and moved down to live in Menheniot as his in-laws owned a bungalow on the Trewint Estate and purchased the village hairdressers (Carol-Anne's) for my sister in law. (This was in the late sixties/seventies). My brother and sister-in-law (Brian & Carol) married in Menheniot church and I remember being a bridesmaid and loads and loads of villagers waiting outside the church when we came out. They lived in Liskeard to begin with, then bought a bungalow on the Fourgates estate when they were first built. I spent every summer with them and as the hairdressers was somewhat the centre of the village, I got to know many many of the villagers over the years. I well remember Mr & Mrs Harris who ran the Co-Op, Mrs Scannelberry who lived in the house adjoining the hairdressers, Molly Paler who owned the bangalow called Imago on the Trewint Estate next to the Bowdens, the Giddys and many... Sylvia Pearse
I remember your grandparents and Sylvia. They used to visit Central Villas a lot. Sylvia was a friend of Florence and Walter Bennett (sister and brother). My parents Rex and Gwen Harris lived next door. I was wondering what had happened to Sylvia only recently. Seem to remember she married and had a daughter later in life. Sylvia and her daughter visited my mother at Hartmeade Estate and the little girl sang a song for her on her eightieth birthday. My parents ran the village Co-Op. Yes, it was sad that the 'big house' got pulled down. Think I saw it once. Hope this is of help, I live in New Zealand now but was in Menheniot just over two years ago, my friend Marilyn Randle lives at Bowling Green estate and I keep in touch with Rosemarie Harding at Hartmeade estate where my parents lived after they retired.
