Frank Barnes School For Deaf

The Childrens Holiday Camp c1960

When I was around 11/12 years old I stayed at this holiday camp several times. We all came down from London and had a great time playing war games with the local kids. I remember my friends and I buying children size army hats from the corner store. Our teacher saw us with our hats on and asked us to line up like soldiers and walk in a straight line. We often had a ride on the little train. We went to Dungeness to visit the lighthouse and had our picture taken. I recently returned to Dymchurch and enjoyed exploring and retracing my steps.

Holidays in The 1950's

My parents and I used to stay in a bungalow owed by a Mr & Mrs Tidy and I was made to keep it tidy! I loved the sandy beach and remember playing deck tennis on the sand. Next door was a family with three girls, their father was the local postman.

I will be back in England in September 2008 (I have lived in Australia since 1963) and hope to revisit St Mary's Bay and ride on the railway.

Belvedere And Little Belvedere

Would anyone remember the above ? My Great Great Grandfather bought a plot of land in Jefferson Lane and obtained a Southern Railway carriage which he made into a holiday home calling it Belvedere after the place where the family lived. He also built a tiny bungalow on the same plot called Little Belvedere. After the deaths of all my family the carriage was given to one of the Railway Trust enthusiasts club and the land sold off. We had wonderful holidays there, with the park opposite, my Dad fishing for eels in the dykes, the Bailiffs Sargeant pub and mine and my brother's favourite night out at the Star Inn on the marsh. We would stay outside with a bag of crisps and a bottle of lemonade - as it was often quite misty we would imagine all sorts of things.

Grand Hotel, Littlestone, 1963

I remember attending my aunt's 21st Birthday Party at the Grand Hotel in 1963. I was 3 years old. They had strung a fishing net from the ceiling of the ballroom and filled it with balloons. Every now and again one of the balloons would get loose and float down to the dance floor where the people would do their best to stamp on it. I loved balloons and my cousin and I collected up the pieces of the broken balloons hoping to put them back together. Imagine my dismay when - at the end of the night - the net was released and ALL the balloons came down at once to the accompaniment of much stamping.

My Memories of Bilsington

I can remember moving to Bilsington village when I was just over seven years old.
I attended Bilsington Primary School and have clear memories of Miss Fellows (the headmistress). She had a kind heart I think but at the time she seemed very strict to me. She would take us off for nature walks and it was during these times that I learned to love the soft greens of the countryside. She would point out to us the wonders of the wildlife and plants and we would pick grasses and wild flowers to take back and decorate our classroom with.
Our Sports Days were held in the field opposite the school ( the one with the monument in) and I can remember having to clear the field of sheeps' droppings so that we could take part in the sporting activities without fear of falling in sheeps' poo!
We had school outtings once a year, and the school would be closed the day before (much to my... Read more

School Years

I lived at Glebe House. I went to the primary school at Warehorne, the very strict head was Miss Sane (later to become Mrs Buxton) and my teacher was Miss Small. Most of Kenardington's children including myself got taken to school in Mr. Worsely's Taxi, a very old taxi that smelt of real leather. He used to be strict and would threaten to 'box your ears' if you didn't sit still. Manor farm was a beautiful mixed farm that housed every farm animal and at that time was tenanted by Mr. White who had a son called Alexander. I used to visit him at the farmhouse and watch 'Champion the Wonder Horse'. Steam trains used to run by at the crossing and my friend Linda's father, Mr. Kinane, used to be the crossing keeper. His wife used to take us to the cinema in Ashford and for this we would have to walk down the line to Appledore to catch the train! You could see the steam trains passing through... Read more
