Summer High Tides

I used to hire the Council deck chairs and beach floats on East Looe beach and rake and clean out the beach tents as a student summer job. On the high tides when the tents were removed the sea would break against the promenade wall. After each wave the kids would identify any exposed silver coins lost by 'visitors' in the... [more]

Punch and Judy

During the summer season we had Punch and Judy shows on Looe main beach. The puppeteer would parade up and down the prom and beach on a pair of very tall stilts. This, of course, would get everybody's attention. He would 'advertise' his next show. Can't remember how much it cost though!

Skiddery Rock

I remember as a child sliding down 'skiddery rock'. It seemed so large at the time.
Alas, most of it has now disappeared beneath the 'new' promenade. The rock was a large inclined slab behind the 'top' Bassett's Cafe.

Living in Seaton 1950s/1960s

My parents owned Mount Brioni in the late 1950s to early 1960s, I was just a baby, I had 5 sisters and 3 brothers who all lived there.

I remember the Doneys who owned the cafe on the beach and spent many happy days on our beach.

Holidays in Downderry

Uncle Tim owned the left side of Tremmor Cottage, next to St Nicolas Church, as a holiday home. He would let it out privately to friends and family. Subsequently he changed his holiday venue to the house next door - Firside Cottage. Unfortunately he took up permanent residence there a few years ago.
Thus my last family holiday in Downderry was... [more]

Downderry coastguard

I first visited Downderry fifty years ago on my honeymoon. My husband's (Bill Polwin Baxter) father William Henry Polwin had been coastguard there towards the end of the 19th century - my mother-in-law was born at the coastguard house in St Mawes. It was a beautiful day and we swam in the sea at the bottom of the garden. I am... [more]

Helston Photographic Memories

The stream is actually the River Cober, which used to regularly flood this area of Lower Green. When this happened, bands of men were despatched to Loe Bar to dig a channel to drain off the floodwater, and the Corporation, in accordance with custom, presented the Lord of the Manor with a leather purse containing three halfpennies. Today a permanent culvert prevents flooding.

Helston Photographic Memories

This picture was probably taken just down the road from Penventon Farm. The big house set back from the road left of centre is Weeth, and past it the road continues down into the valley of the Cober.

Helston Photographic Memories

We are looking north-east up the valley to the town. St Michael's is on the skyline, and round the bend in the valley to the left is the site of St John's Priory Hospital, which cared for travellers and lepers from 1220 to 1580.
