Hairdressers/Barbers

Would anyone remember the name and exact location of a hairdressers/barbers shop in Kettering Regent Street area? Looking at late 1920's onwards.

The Bus Station

I have put 1970 as my year of recollection, but I was catching the 259 service from bay 5 at about the time this photograph was taken.
In 1970 I was working on the buses as a conductor and by 1974 as a driver.
You will see in the photo that buses reversed onto the bays, this changed in the mid... [more]

Working in Kettering Careers Office

I spent an enjoyable month in Spring 1988 working for Kettering Careers Office as part of my training during a post grad year for my Careers Guidance Diploma.

I remember Tresham College, lovely shops, friendly people, a comfortable bed and breakfast for the month arranged for me by the college, and my journey each Sunday and Friday evening by... [more]

Kettering Town and City Memories

The Royal Hotel (left) vied with the George in attracting a superior local clientele. Next door, the drapers, Pritchard's, has a sun awning to prevent the window display fading. Beyond we can see the façade of the Midland Bank, now HSBC. The neo-Georgian building beyond was to be rebuilt as the Granada Cinema (see K13065, pages 36-37). Lloyds Bank, on the... [more]

Northamptonshire Photographic Memories

It's a case of spot the difference here. At first glance this picture looks exactly the same as the other photograph of the Royal Hotel, No 72228, but a closer look reveals subtle changes. A butcher's delivery boy can be seen cycling down the road, more of the shop fronts are covered by awnings, and a uniformed policeman can be seen... [more]

The Royal Hotel looks pretty much the same today as it did then. Even the AA sign is in the same place, though the current one is a more up-to-date version. One large window also replaces the two to the right of the main entrance.
