Keymer
I lived in Keymer from birth (1950) to 1954 then from 1966-1974. I lived in my early years at the "Old Thatch", Lodge Lane. My aunt and uncle, plus cousins, lived at the cottages to the north of us, formerly the local workhouse, then moved further down Lodge Lane to the large Victorian houses near the fire station, my uncle was in the fire service at that time. The shop pictured on the left in the photograph of Keymer Road belonged to the local greengrocer, Mr Hodges, his son Micheal was a friend of my two cousins. The Greyhound pub at that time had on its internal beams coins nailed to them by troops from all over the empire who were stationed in this area during the Second World War, I was saddened to find they had all been removed in a recent refurbishment. We spent many jolly evenings there, my dad was a founder member of the Hassocks and district angling club and meetings were held at the Greyhound "the one that got away, etc"! My memories of Keymer are many and happy, maybe I will continue this in the future.

RE: RE: Keymer
I am wondering if Mr. John England was ever aquainted with the Collins family who lived over their electrical shop in Keymer. I am the daughter of Joe Collins and was married in the church at Keymer in 1969. I was born and lived in Grand Avenue, Hassocks and then we moved to Keymer where I lived until married when I moved to Brighton. My Dad had the elec. shop for years and my two brothers, Peter and Joe worked in the firm. Is there anybody out there who remembers these days.

RE: RE: Keymer
Thanks John and Pauline, it's been a pleasure to read your memories. I've not been on the Frith site for a while so have only just seen your notes. As I lived in London Road, I don't think we mixed a great deal with you Keymer people, except at school, as it was too far to go to play at weekends or evenings. Later on in our teen years we probably mixed a bit more. I remember Mike Hodges and we stayed in touch into our 20s until I moved away from Hassocks. I also remember David Cragg. I think Mike and David may have been cousins and that both families were involved with the Keymer Fire Brigade. In recent years I know that David has been a bellringer at Ditchling and that he has been involved with morris dancing and mummers, locally. Pauline, I do remember your family's electrical shop in Keymer.
