Potts Ancestry Kibblesworth

My father Edward Potts was born in Kibblesworth in 1900 his brothers were William Potts, Noble Potts and his sister was Hilda Potts.

All the brothers were miners in Kibblesworth. When dad married we moved to Birtley but used to visit Uncle William fairly regularly usually on a Sunday when we would walk from Birtley and up the railway wagon line into the village. It made our walk a little shorter. Uncle William and aunt Nancy lived in Gardner Square and I remember the large grass park in front of the house.

Dad's family was very large as Grandma Eliza had first married Joseph Eltringham and had a family, Joseph died and she then married my grandfather William Potts and they had a family. His first marriage was to Dorothy Ann Woodhouse and they had a family.
Altogether with the 3 families there was about 17 children. No wonder I never knew who was who.

Frederick John Potts married Dorothy Ann Robson and he and the Wilkinson family were rivals as to who to grow the best leeks.

I can still see in my mind the very large pit heap and the tower with the large wheel for bringing the cage (or lift) up and down the shaft.

RE: RE: Potts Ancestry, Kibblesworth

Hi Catherine, I know we haven't spoke for ages. I've managed to track down and buy a copy of the book we once spoke about showing some of the Potts and others from Kibblesworth. In it is the picture of my great-grandfaher Fred Potts shown with his leeks as mentioned in the comment above. On the rear cover is a picture of another Fred Potts who my dad said was his uncle (brother of George Robson). I'll try to scan some of the pictures if it would be of interest to you. Thanks, Geoff

RE: RE: Potts Ancestry Kibblesworth

Hello Catherine, I worked at Kibblesworth for ten years from 1955. I ended up in the old pit and "Lang Fred Potts" as he was nicknamed was a deputy down there. There were quite a few Potts in the village in fact I always argued that there were more Potts than Pans in the village. I did my pit training with Tommy McEnerny (I hope I have spelled his name correctly ) up at Annfield Plain in the summer of 1955. We were both to enter the new pit in September. In 1958 we me and Tommy did our face training. I recall the stone work teachers. Tom King and Nicky from Birtley. I ended up putting for six years and then onto the peak of my career as a coal hewer. I worked with ssome great lads down there. Jimy parmer, a coal hewer for scores of years used to bring a bar of chocolate in for the putters that is if you could beat deputy Andrew Dawson as Andrew used to pilfer the chocolate allegedly, when he was on Jimmys shift but Andrew never left any fingerprints.. I think Tommy McEnerney and his brother Frankie are related to you as is Brian Eltringham. You will probably know my relatives in the village. Pauline, Philip and Sheila May.
