Isle of Wight memories

Growing up in Showell

I grew up in Shorwell and lived there between 1972 and 1980. Being one of the Vicar's sons wasn't easy as everyone knew me and I couldn't get away with anything! But what wonderful memories of a simple and fun childhood. Everyone knew each other and many villagers met regularly at the Midsummer Fair and garden parties on the Vicarage lawn. What simple and carefree days they were and how I long for them again. Alas time and life moves on but Shorwell and those great childhood memories will be with me for the rest of my life.

Beautiful Memories Made Here

Husband and I visiting from Battle Creek, MI USA. Cousin and wife living in Niton and took us all over the Isle. I took a picture in front of the 2 cottages with the church behind them. Your picture of the same site brings back great memories.

Visiting The Buddle Inn

Have a cousin who took my husband and I to the Buddle Inn when we visited in 2005. Howard family ate there many times. When we visited again in 2006, cousin Bob had moved to Niton. He probably lives only a mile from the inn. Of course, we went there again and I just sat there, thinking of my relatives being there. I have a lovely picture of the inn to go with my memories.

Our house is the second left and I was about 8 when this was taken. The field in front of the houses is now the site of the Methodist Chapel.

I walked past these houses every day to and from school from 1956 to 1959 when my family lived at Marsh Green.

I remember walking past here every day to school from 1950 to 1956 and then I went to Freshwater secondary modern school and still walked by it to catch the bus until I left the village in 1959. I remember the path on the left had a stile and footpath that came out by the pub, where that path joins New Road opposite was the mill stream with a wooden bridge and we used to play pooh sticks along the river bank and try to get them past the weir that was at the back of Mr Fisks farm house. My father was the village policeman and we lived at The Lindens.

Fletchers Pond

I first used to cycle to this school - which was split between Newport Priory Boys' Secondary Modern School and Carisbrooke Grammar School - in 1961. The long, low building to the left of the picture was the Priory Boys' School, the taller building to the right was the Grammar.
Every day I cycled from my home in Clatterford Road, round the back of St Mary's Church, past Fletcher's Pond, and then down the track you can see in the photo to the school. The track crossed the old railway line from Newport to Freshwater just about where the first hedge line is, and Carisbrooke Station was to the right, out of shot. I only remember it as rubble, because the line was closed before I went to the school, and I think there was a fire at the station, but I may be wrong. Anyway, there was nothing much left.
I remember the school was set on several levels with a gymnasium at one end, and the canteen at... Read more
