Miners Rows, Crawfords And McCrones

My Mum, Elizabeth Crawford married Dad and went to live in London.....I was brought to Kirkconnel at a month old and baptised in the Parish Church......every year we came up with Dad's motor bike and sidecar to visit my Granny Kenny (she had married Peter Kenny after my Grandad James had died in 1944)...... I well remember the miners rows and the green wooden door with the onion shaped knob in the middle......the main room with black stone flags, the range, the hole in the wall for the bed, and the bedroom off the main room, also the kitchen with its toilet at the back.....sink and spicket.....the washtub and mangle out the back and the garden, chickens and brick gully......going round to Sabs to get the best lime lolly ever, he backed onto 2 Mons Street.....and the lady opposite who baked break and scones and taking money round and buying scones.....taking the jug out to the milkman with his churn......walking alongside the Nith to the swings.......David the blind man who... Shows at Kirkconnel

I travelled every year with Broughtons shows, and worked on the dodgems. We got cans of water from the houses near, I would think they have been knocked down by now. I used to go to the Italian cafe and walk along the river. We were made welcome. My name was Paddy, I was 20 then. Great days.

Kirkconnel

I remember about Kirkconnel/Kelloholm, everyone takes care of all children, my children used to go to Kelloholm Primary, they used to get bullied at first for being English, they changed their accent to not get bullied, no one knew they were English then, not that it should matter.

Dumfriesshire memories

My Grandparents

My Grandparents lived in Kelloholm on Anderson Street, Number 31 or 32. I remember my Grandad used to be the caretaker at the school in Kirkconnell.
They then lived in the Toll House. My Grandad's name was Alexander (Sanny) Templeton. My Grandma was Isabella. They had 3 children, Margaret, Neilly and John who is my Dad. I remember that I used to go play on a children's playground that had a putting green and bowling green opposite. My uncle worked down the pit and he died quite young, and my aunt was a teacher, she lived in Eaglesfield.

Happy Times

I was born at 56 Anderson Street and my grandparents Alexander and Jane Kerr lived in Graham Street. We used to visit every year until 1960? when they passed away. We used to stay with our aunt and uncle who lived in Greystone Avenue. I remember learning to swim in the killie? I think it was called, and buying a sweet called Tablet, visiting relations, all good things. I know all my cousins all live there still. I have a photo of myself at six weeks old being held by a Mr Dixson of Anderson Street. We used to love coming to Kelloholm. All the happy times, if anybody wants to get in touch they will be more than welcome. Thank you, Pauline

My Growing up Years

I grew up in Mcconnel Street, my dad was John Burns. I had many friends. As children we also spent many happy times up the Killie, I also remember sliding downhill just above water on a piece of cardboard, how we never went into water I'll never know! I also love Saturday it took us all day to prepare for Saturday night dancing at the Drill Hall, I had lots of happy times there, all us girls used to rock and roll with each other because the boys didn't come in till later, mostley after being at the pub! There are lots of memories of Kelloholm, Kirkconnel. My brothers (3) and sister all grew up there and another memory I have is of picking blubells down by the river near the swing park and us all congregating at Wullie Waddle's chip shop at night and sharing a bag of chips. I could write a book.

Kello Water

When I lived in Kelloholm, I lived on Polmeur Road close to the short cut from Polmeur to Greystone Avenue. My mum and dad Jessie and Johnny Grierson moved into 49 Polmeur Road in 1948 one month after I was born. My mum and dad used to take us picnicking to the big grassed area we all knew as the picnic park next to the Kello Water. It is now sadly overgrown and rutted due to tractors driving over it to pick up stone from the river. I went for a walk up the Killie in October 2007, it had been 40 years since I last walked there. I was overjoyed to be walking where I walked, swam and played when I was a boy. At the same time it was a little sad that no one seems to walk there any more. All the footpaths were gone and I never saw any other person all day. I took lots of pictures that day and again in 2009 when I... Read more
