Mossknowe House -- Teackle Mansion in The US
I live in the State of Maryland in the US and have never been to Scotland, although our family geneology has been traced there. My reason for writing is this house.
In my town of Princess Anne, Maryland, we have a house known as Teackle Mansion, built in 1802 by Littleton Dennis Teackle who toured Scotland in 1799 and was inspired by the architecture to recreate, to the best of his abilities, a Scottish manor house which he encountered. Mossknowe House is the one we (the historical society of Somerset County, Maryland) believe to be the one. I will provide you with a link to the Teackle Mansion in Princess Anne so you can see for yourselves!
Do you know if the home is privately owned? If so, is there any way in which we can contact the owners to share this information? Thank you so much for this site!

RE: RE: Mossknowe House -- Teackle Mansion in The US
I am doing my Family Tree search.
My G.G.G. Grandparents were William Moffat & Christina Moffat (Fraser). They were both born in Ecclelefechan. 1775 & 1777. They were married at Annan Sept 1796.
Their son was born 1797 at Wysbie Hill, Kirkpatrick Fleming. Could anyone tell me if this place still exists.
Thank You,
Regards, M. Titterington

RE: RE: Mossknowe House -- Teackle Mansion in The US
My family history endeavours have 'taken me', via the internet, from Australia, back in time to Scotland, in pursuit of the footsteps of one George Moore. George had emigrated from Scotland to Australia. In Australia, George married in New South Wales. He and his Australian-born wife left New South Wales and went westward to live in Western Australia. The 1910 Western Australia Census shows George and Katie Moore living in a house named 'Moss Knowe', Blencowe Street, Leederville. Knowing that George Moore had been born in Scotland, I decided to see whether he had 'transported' the name 'Moss Knowe' from his homeland in Scotland to Australia. Did the name 'Moss Knowe' exist elsewhere, in particular in Scotland, I wondered ... My enquiries drew a few responses including: 'Mossknowe' is a small country house about l kilometre SE of Kirkpatrick Fleming, a Dumfriesshire village which lies about 7 kilometres ENE of Dornock. Then I found on the internet a property for sale: 'East Lodge', Mossknowe, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Lockerbie, DG11 3BQ. So 'Moss Knowe' did exist back home! Finally, I learned today that James Moore, the father of George Moore, usually resided at Mossknowe, Lowtherton. This information was recorded on James Moore's marriage document in Dornock, in 1855.

Mossknowe Estate: To E of B6357 (opposite mill) is site of WW2 German POW working camp No.612; it was also called Honduras Camp.
Mossknowe House (1767): Unusual Palladian villa-country house designed by William Craik of Arbigland. Walled garden and stables are of note.
