Memories of Doncaster Road c1955, Langold
Evacuee
I was sent by my mother as an evacuee to stay with her sister Lilian to get away from the bombs dropping over Wimbledon during the war. My Uncle Wilf and Aunt Lill lived above the Tylers Shoe Shop in Langold. Uncle Wilf (Scotney) was the manager of this shop and also of the one in Doncaster. I started school in Langold in the infants 1942/43 just before I was five years old. Uncle Wilf sang in the church choir along with my cousin Tony. I had so much fun and loved Langold, especially the British Legion Hall and the Cinema where we kids would go on a Saturday morning. I have many happy memories of the Hepworth family and Robin Brummie and the farm where we played. There was so much freedom, very different for a "townie" like me. Nellie Pollard
My Nan, 'Nellie Pollard', lived in Guest Villas at the bottom of the hill from Langold, going towards Worksop. I had some great holidays in Langold, I'm sure it was a great place for kids to live during 1970s. If anyone remembers my nan, please drop me a line.
Oldcotes & Langold
The Priories Historical Society based in Oldcotes are looking for any old photos, maps, books, documents to facilitate our research into this important archaeological area. The Priories have talks every month at Oldcotes Village Hall (see website).
I live in Langold now and it is still very similar looking, the cinema has gone but the snooker hall is still there. Smokies pub is gone as is Langold Hotel. The Hilltop and Jays are still there. The Church is still on Church Street. And last but not least the important Langold Lake is still here giving sanctuary to many types of wildlife.

Langold British Legion
By, this photo brings back memories. I lived at the then British Legion Club from 1951 to 1958 while my mother and father Jack and Mavis Harding were club steward and stewardess. I started school there in 1951 and it has great memories for me, it was a great time with Langold Lake nearby in its prime. I still think of my old school mates sometimes, and even though I was young I can still remember some of the old colliers that came into the club, and even old Jack who was the doorman there for many a year. My Grandad's Shop
On the very right of this photo is my grandad's shop. He had his name FV DRABBLE on the front, you can just see part of the name in the photo. My grandad was Langold's only cobbler. The bottom half of the windows were painted some kind of horrible creamy yellow colour to hide all the machinery etc that was in the area to the right of the door. I have no idea when he first opened up the shop, but I understand that his business started with him making clogs for the miners. I remember helping him in the shop on many an occasion when I was in my early teens. My grandad and grandma lived in Carlton on the green in a house called Ivy Cottage, that had green iron railings round the front. Good Old Days
langold was a great place to be brought up in the 70s and 80s for a young lad got some great memories dont live there anymore but will remember it with a smile.
School Road
I used to live at 5 School Road nearly 20 years ago. My mum used to work at Dianes florists on Donny Road and my Dad managed the Corner Pocket snooker club. I still visit there now as my stepmum lives on Donny Road and my Dad, I'm very sad to say, is buried at Langold cemetery.
Langold has so many memories for me from when I was little and I will always cherish them forever. I would love to visit my old house on School Road.

I used to live opposite these shops and I can honestly say the place is just the same today as when this photo was taken.
Searching For Memories
I need help please. I am looking for graves and memories of William and Mary Jones, who died approximately between 1970-1975. My husband's family have been unable to locate the graves. They are believed to be burried in Langold but I am not exactly sure of the cemetery. Are there any cemetery records or newspaper articles that I may be able to researh on-line? We live in San Antonio, Texas in the USA so any help would be greatly appreciated. These were his grandparents that he never met. He would like to locate the graves before our next visit. He is trying to determine if there are gravestones and if not he would like to make sure that is taken care of for fear of losing them forever. Any help would be fantastic.
