My Grandfather's Memories of Ledbury as A Boy
My grandfather, Percy Sturge was born in Ledbury in 1896 and here are some of his memories he related to me when he was in his 90's. His mother, Annie, had lived by the Brewery Inn and one granny lived in Puddlinghams Yard (All Saints), another lived down by the bridge. One day one of his grannies came home carrying a faggot of hops on her head. Several brothers lived by The White Hart and one worked at the Talbot Inn. Grandfather and his parents lived in Bye Street and his mother took him to see the celebrations at the Relief of Mafeking during the Boer War in 1900. His great-grandfather was a master shoemaker who wore silver buckles on his shoes. He had the chance to buy Ledbury for £25 [unfortunately he didn't]. Percy used to watched the magic lantern shows at the Market House in Ledbury, which was put on by the Band of Hope and he loved to play Fox & Hounds on a moonlit night. To get money for... Read more
Herefordshire memories
Memories of A Bygone Era :
My glorious childhood summer holidays were spent with relatives living at Bradlow - and especially my grandfather (died 1947) with whom I would go for walks into the Frith Woods to collect logs and kindling sticks for the open fires. On Sundays there would be attendance at St.Michael's and All Angels Church - best outfits for these occasions! Fridays would be visits to Ledbury Town calling in at Kington's the Butchers : Borne the Chemist : Tilley's the Stationers - and above all Frank Lewis for Grandad's weekly tobacco supplies! Those were the days - such wonderful happy memories. There's lots I could write - and lots I would love to share with anyone who is interested! Will write more - have only just found the site but time limited today.
Old Country
Hi I have only just found this web site but I lived at "the woodings" Old Country, Nr Bosbury from 1963 to 1973. We used to have a pub next door to us which my foster mother was not happy about.
We many animals including a donkey, pony, numerous dogs and cats and of course chickens. I remember the winter with all the snow and stil, have some old B/W photos.
We used to have lovely walks with the dogs in the local country side and we also went to the Malvern Hills quite alot. I also attended Malver Boys College. Wonderful memories,it seems like yesterday and in some ways I wish it was. I remember the shops in Bosbury and was taught to drive by the owner of the garage who let me drive his e-type jaguar.
Any way hope this is of interest and look forward to any other comments
Malvern Wells
Does anyone remember the army transit camp in Malvern Wells called Wood Farm Camp? I looked on Google Earth and all that is there is a field, I had some great memories of this place when I was a kid.
Mom Lived in Baynards...1930-40's
Mom went to the country to live during the war. She lived in a big field - the house and land were let by the Fulton Brick Works, I believe that was the name. I have about 5 pictures of her home with my Auntie Connie.
Childhood Years
Many hours were spent playing on the hills around this area. In the centre of the picture is a mound, we called it the Tump, it was the excavation from the cutting and it was made into a feature with three seats or benches for walkers to enjoy a rest and admire the views over Herefordshire.
The Lee Family
My grandmother Elsie Thomas married Harold Victor Lee in 1929. Sadly he died 3 months later. They were living at 2 Albion Villas, Lower Wyche. He was a Dept Manager at a Clothing Shop. His father was a grocer - William Edward Lee. Until recently we didnt know anything about this marriage. If anyone knows the Lee family, if they are still in the area or knows where Albion Villas is could they please get in touch many thanks
