Kent memories
My Local Parish Church
Living at Ashburton, St Luke's was my local parish church where I got married in 1968, a lovely church. Although 40 plus years have passed, I still have good memories of living in the area.
Children's Home
I was in a children's home for a very short time in the summer of 1946. Does anyone have any infomation? I believe it was called The Lantern.
Stalisfield Church
Hi I grew up living at Stalisfield, and left when I was 18. My mother died and my father is still there and recently I have become more interested in the history of Stalisfield. Why is the church so far from the village? What used to be by the church? Was there a windmill there as well? Any information about the history would be very interesting. Thank you.
My Ancestral Home
I'm American and live in Northern California. This is my first trip to England and I'm hoping to visit Bicknor. My great-great-grandfather was the Vicar of Bicknor. His last name was Seager; I never knew his first name. I have a watercolor of the vicarage where he and his family lived. The Vicar and his wife had 4 sons - Robert, Charles, Edward and Edmund Seager. All were graduates of Oxford University. The two youngest were twins and emigrated to Ontario, Canada. One of Edward's children was Mary Seager, my great-grandmother. I have about 30 letters, dated in the 1870's, written by Edward to his daughter after she was married. She married Charles Muldoon and emigrated to Buffalo, New York, where Charles operated a tobacco store. They had 9 children amd my gradmother, Cecelia Muldoon Huebner, was the youngest. I've heard about our roots in Bicknor all my life and I hope to see it soon.
Hop Picking
I used to go to Little Chart Farm, Pluckley as a child, being born in the East End in 1946. My memories are of freedom and adventure, long, happy carefree days spent in the beautiful Kent countryside, for a few weeks each summer. My aunt and uncle Ivy and Tom Smart had a wooden hut on the farm and my parents and I used to join them for a holiday. The picking of hops was a hard, thirsty and dirty job, their hands were stained green and smelt strongly of the hops. We kids used to explore, the surrounding area, scrumping apples from the orchards, and being chased by then farmer, visiting the spooky ruined church, of which there was supposed to be a haunting by a hooded monk. A phantom coach and horses was said to be seen or sometimes just heard thundering past one of the local pubs. Parsonage Farm, Bredgar
I lived next door to John Veitch in Pond Farm Road, Borden. Sadly John passed away many years ago... John and his brother Sid owned Parsonage Farm. I spend as many hours as I could on the farm and can still smell the smell of the cows and in the summer the harvesting of the wheat. The tractor driver was John Luckhurst, he allowed me to ride on his tractor all the time. Health and Safety would have a fit these days... I was told that John Luckhurst also passed away. I could not ride a bike so went everywhere on a triange scooter. We had a dog called Sooty who would, whenever he got a chance, run off to find a bitch in heat and I spent many hours scooting from Borden to Bredgar to find him and drag him back home.. May Family From 1770
I'm not adding a memory but I do have an interest in Throwley. I have been doing some family research on my mother's side and I have found my 2 x great-grandfather JOHN MAY was born in Throwley in the year 1842, and it looks like the Mays go back to my 5 x greatgrandfather THOMAS. What I would like to know and I know this will be a long shot but is any of the family still living in Throwley, or can anyone help me with any form of info, I would love to hear from you.
