Teenage Years

High Street c1960

Hot dog stall, Lewisham, Wooly's Saturday afternoon, Saturday morning pictures, Cheismans, Elvis, rock and roll, Chislehurst caves, jazz Saturday nights, chasing girls to get candle back, being chased by Deptford boys in Bedford van, clambering through the river tunnel under Cheismans, courting in Ladywellwreck, youth club in Davenport Road, Catford, watching the show on the bandstand in Mountfield Park, playing hide and seek in the bushes in Mountfield Park - the memories are coming back maybe to haunt all of us from these lovely years. I remember my mother playing the piano and singing in the local pubs, the Black Bull where I met my first wife, the Spotted Cow - what a pub, the Queen's Arms, Courthill Road (we called this pub the Breakers Arms), never ever a dull moment but never any trouble, just comedy, Coronation Day party in the playground of Ennersdale School, walking my girl home to Lee Green (I lived in Hither Green), first kiss long, whistling walk home, I was 9, running errands to Brewsters pub where my Aunt Bud worked to buy port and arrowroot biscuit for Mum, me and dog Mandy playing in the allotments at the back of our garden... the memories are flooding back now so I will continue another time. I hope this jogs someone's memory somewhere, I'll continue another time.

RE: RE: Teenage Years

Lovely memories, Martin, made me smile. I, too was brought up at Hither Green. Spent a lot of time in Mountsfield Park, those rides in that playground were top banana, no "elf and safety" in those days. I went to Sandhurst School. Lovely sweet shops in Springbank Road. I remember the Spotted Cow, it was boarded up last time I saw it. I remember having pony rides round the toy department at Chiesman's. How mad was that. Used to go to Chislehurst caves with my friend who lived in Lee. My first job was in C & A in Lewisham. I used to walk there and back in high heels! I'd need stablizers now for those. I wonder if you ever played piano in the "Railwayman's Arms" at Hither Green"? Used to buy those "Embassy" records from "Woolies", where you got two "a" sides, but not the original artist. We didn't care. They were lovely, happy times.

RE: RE: Teenage Years

Re Teenage years. Lewisham has changed a lot, Since my teenage years.1940-46.
Dancing at Ladywell Baths & The Co-op Hall Brownhill Road, also we could take our own records to be played for dancing at a little hall over a garage opposite the Spotted Cow. Pictures at The Gaumont, Prince of Wales, & the Kings Hall ,later to become the Rex.Lewisham Hip (Hippodrome) variety shows & the occasional Ballet.
Later all of this came to an end with the Bombing of Lewisham. We still continued going to the Cinema, and although we could come out if the Air Raid Alert was sounded,we stayed to see the pictures through. Elfreda nail varnish & Phulnana scent satchets at Woolworths. A big rush to buy when the word went round.
Happy days.Despite the trials & tribulations.
