The Welch Family
My great great grandparents were born and married in Barkway before coming to the US in 1854. I am wondering if there are any relatives of John and Sarah (Butler) Welch in Barkway. I will definitely have to visit some day.
Memories of The Bentley Family
This photo, along with the other 4, attracted my attention because the thatched cottage on the left is where my father, Arthur Sidney Bentley, was born in 1926. He lived all his life in Barkway until his death in 2005. Married to Pamela Mary Sharp of nearby Therfield, he had 3 children, one of them myself, Jeffrey born in 1952. Linda Bentley was born next in 1953 and Ronald in 1956.
The school also brings back fond memories with Mrs Dellow teaching me in the first formative years, she has only just died, so she lived a long life. Mrs Cranwell of nearby Chrishall also lived a long life and she taught me Corn Dolly making and was fantastic with History. She used to arrive in her messerscmidt car!!

My Memories of Wyddial
My father's people were from Wyddial, their name was Pinner. I was baptized at St. Giles, along with my sister. (My parents felt I should be old enough to remember this event). The dish in the font was cracked. I later stayed with my cousin Angela, she lived in Buntingford, her parents were from Aspenden. For the six weeks I was with her I worked for Mr Hodge, of Hodges Farm, Wyddial. My dad had worked for the same farm as a boy. I worked at the duck farm.
Royston 1967-9
I worked for Airwork Services in the late 1960s and there were people from Royston who worked there, there was a girl called Linda who worked on the camp hairdressers and a couple of others, I can't recall the names but I still have photos taken outside the shop alongside the lady who was next door in the NAAFIshop. If anyone sees this can they add a comment if they remember Pat the little Scotsman? I went in a gang to the fairground with Linda and others to Royston. I loved that town but had to leave when camp closed. I know Linda got a job in a hairdressers in Royston as I spoke to her on the phone some years later. I am retired now and might find myself up for a weekend from where I live in Kent.
Royston Heath Lodge (work House)
A memory that I shouldn't recollect. I could have only been about 4 years old and I can remember staying at Heath Lodge with my family. It was I think used as a halfway house for families waiting for housing in the 1960s. I'm now 50 and I can still remember my mother taking me to the nursery underneath the balcony where we lived, and watching her leave to go to the shops. I can still see the chain link fencing that went round the walkway. I still remember some of the families that lived in the same place, the Lloyds and the Jarmins. If anyone else can remember staying at Heath Lodge in the 1960s I would like to hear from you and also anyone who has any photos of Heath Lodge - I know it was demolished in 1972. Bassingbourn Airfield
A relative of mine worked on the airfield for a private contractor until his death in 1940. His name was George Fynn, of Rainham in Essex. He was riding pillion on a motor bike whan they had a head on with an R.A.F. truck near the airfield. Would anyone know of this person?
The Green
My earliest memory, is going to look at The Green, on the High Street in Fowlmere. It was in a poor state and the ceiling in the kitchen had collapsed. My father, had built a house in the village called Mere Place on Rectory Lane, so decided to take on the mammoth task of restoring this amazing house. One of his discoveries was the inglenook fireplace, which had been bricked in. The cellars were a no-go area, my mother used to grow mushrooms down there. It was a wonderful playground for us children, with its Victorian stable block, acres of fields, and in the garden an old Orangerie - none of these exist today. The house and grounds had previously belonged to the Jackson family, who lived in a cottage near to the church. I remember going there to have tea and playing with their dogs, Cinders and Soders!
