Hertfordshire memories
First Love
These are the cottages where my first "love" lived her name was Barbara and I had a school boy crush on this lovely young lady in my early teens.
I also fell off my bike just round the corner of this bridge and grazed my knee!
Gossoms End Berkhampstead
I was adopted by a Mr & Mrs Cater who owned a General Store at 27 Gossoms End, Berkhampsted. I have fond memories of my childhood freedom and playing in the area, including many hours on the Grand Union Canal either fishing or jumping on and off the barges. I went to the prep school of Berkhampstead Grammar and spent a short time at the senior school before the family moved to North London. The demise of the family business was brought on by the arrival of the first supermarket in Berkhampsted High Street.
Grandmother's Birthplace
When, after my marriage, I went to live in Berkhamsted in late 1970 I had no idea that I was to find out that my Grandmother, Dorothy Flowers had been born here at Ashridge House. Her father was coachman to Lord Brownlow, who at that time owned Ashridge, Belton House in Lincolnshire and a London home in Carlton House Terrace (now the home of the Royal Society). Dorothy's father travelled with his lordship between his homes and spent many years in Hertfordshire where he met and married my Great Grandmother, Charlotte Blunt. Charlotte's family lived in and around Berkhamsted for many years and it is only lately that I have begun to try and sort out their lives. They do say that it's a small world, don't they?

Hi, I was christened here at St Peter's Church and lived in Berkhamsted for 21 years.
Northchurch High Street
I recently started to research my family tree. I myself have been living in Northchurch for 19 years. I was very suprised to find that my grandfather was born in Cheddington and raised there, as were his siblings, parents and family going way back. Imagine my suprise when I found that one of my great uncles was living on Northchurch High Dtreet in the 1911 census. I yet need to find out who he was working for as a chauffeur domestic. I do know that he shared a home with a Bertie Pratt. What a very small world.
