Warwickshire memories
Park Lane
I spent many happy days during the summer holidays with my grandparents who lived at No 1 Park Lane. I played in the park opposite and in a wood across a field at the back of the house. There was a pig sty at the bottom of the garden where they kept a couple of pigs until they were ready for slaughter. The butcher, who only had one arm, slaughtered the pigs on the back yard, although as I remember he only had one arm. I believe his name was Eden. One of my favourite places is the churchyard where the family graves are. I can stand in there, shut my eyes and the smell of the evergreen trees is exactly as it was when I was a youngster. I am 71 now. Happy Days.
I Lived Here
I lived at The Malt House, Claverdon in the early mid 1960s. It was owned at the time by Mr Jefferson who lived in a lovely new bungalow a little further away. I loved this house even if it was a bit unusual to live in. I went to school in Claverdon and Miss Lewthwaite was my teacher she was really nice. Does anyone else remember this place?
I don't think the Malt House has changed that much, it still looks lovely in the modern photos I have seen of it. I bet the floors still slope upstairs.
In the barn at the end it had a "Copper" where my mum boiled the whites on washing day and she had to cross the road to hang her washing in a field on the corner.
I Used to Carol Sing Here
This used to be owned by Sir Ivan Stedeford, and every Christmas the choir of St Michael's Church was invited to sing carols in the hall acompaned by Sir Ivan on the grand piano.
The Milkman
My father, Mr.J.A.Green, supplied milk to Claverdon and the surrounding villages for many years. We used to buy our petrol at the pump by the forge. It was owned by Mr. Robin Loman.
Ganaway Farm in Claverdon
My grandfather, William Harwood, leased the "Ganaway Farm" from a Lady Trevelyan in the early 1900's. It is my understanding that the Ganaway Farm was part of or very near the Claverdon Park Farm. I haven't been able to locate any information about the Ganaway Farm, other than what has been written by my English forbearswho have long since passed away. Does anyone have any information about where this farm might have been located, and if it was indeed part of the Claverdon Park Farm Estate? I am making a trip to England and would love to visit the area where my grandfather and grandmother lived. Thanks in advance for any help!
Working on The Farm
I used to work on the farm for a couple of years 1962-63 during my school holidays, mostly driving the Massey Ferguson combine harvester, working with an Eugene Luchinski who was a friend of my family and worked full time on the farm. I remember my mother having a fit when she found out I had been sitting on the back of the Freisian bull the farm had.
