Memorys And Friends of Litton

Hi, I lived in Litton as a child till I was 17 then I joinedthe air force. Fab times horse riding with Maralyn Taylor and Sheila Parsons who I am still in love with. Other friends included Kelvin Parker, Michael Roach, John Rugman, Adrian & Malcolm Larder, Wyndam Court, Patrick Newman, Brian Middle, Gln Church and Geoff & Liz Tucker. Hot summers helping farmers do haymaking and pheasant shoots. I still go back as I have an auntie there (Nesta Tucker) and cousin Liz. Great pub, the Kings Arms. And sorry not forgetting Erica who lives on the common. Anyone wanting to know about Litton contact me at somersetx@aol.com Thanks

Family History

Well, actually 1820s/1830s ... we've been researching our Payne/Pain family history and some members of it were baptised in the little church in Francis's picture. It took us a long time to unravel the family and we haven't been able to get back past those who were baptished in Compton Bishop. Any help would be appreciated.

PS the family migrated in various waves of Somerset migration to Victoria Australia.

I Lived at Beechbarrow

Beech Barrow, Romulus And Remus Monument 2004

I think the date at 1974 is correct but I would have been 6 then!! We owned all of what is Beechbarrow now and as a young man I had the run of the place! I hope the beech walk is still there, I built my first tree house in there! It was on the other side from the barn that Ron Chard had. Ron Chard was the farmer that used the paddocks we had. His son Tom is hopefully running it now, if Ron is not. Romulus & Remus were just a part of life but the best was a little fish pond, as you go in on the right. There is a massive hole/cave in the garden to the left as you go in to Beechbarrow. I only saw it once but Dad and a friend put a paper feed bag down it alight, it was deep and O was not allowed to play there again. In1977 for the Queen's Silver Jubilee there was a big fire on Penn... Read more

Scarlett Withies

My great-grandmother Mahala Willmott was born at a place called Scarlett Withies. Does anyone know where it was? The Willmotts lived on Church Street and later on Long Street.

Three Ashes, Oakhill

We used to stay at Three Ashes, Stoke Hill with my grandparents most summers in the fifties. They were called Moore. My mother (now deceased) was called Enid Moore and was brought up by her grandparents, John Moore a quarryman and his wife (I do not know her first name). Her mother was called Edith Florence May Moore, but we were brought up to call her auntie. Does anyone out there have any memories/photos of the area. I would be most obliged as I am trying to trace my family tree to give to my grandson.

Many thanks

Holiday

Stoke Hill c1950

I had a friend in the late 1960s whose father, Henry Taylor, came from this village. The pair of us drove down from Leeds in an old mini-van and stopped with his grand-parents for a couple of week. We really enjoyed it and spent quite a bit of time in Knatchbull Arms! I remember he also had an auntie Shirley (his dad's sister) and uncle Terry who lived here. They had four small daughters at the time. Terry was a good footballer and played for Frome, Yeovil or Weston or somewhere like that. I was just thinking about this holiday the other week and looked up the village on Google! Came down again a couple of times, once on train and once by car. Lovely place.
