London Evacuation
my mother who is now 76 years of age,was talking with my son who is doing a world war 2 project at school.Only last night she was telling him, that in 1939 october, she aged 8 and a half and her then baby brother aged just 10 months along with their mother were evecuated to stradey castle from vauxhall,sw london.
They stayed for 10 weeks, and my mother said how the statues in the long hall scared the life out of them and also the nearby woods was something she had never seen before. My mothers maiden name was joan trim and her brother roy and late mother florence. The owners were by the name of lewis a laird i believe,by all accounts very nice people.I wondering on behalf of my mother, its the castle still there etc.Thank you Robert Penfold

RE: RE: London Evacuation
Hi The castle is still there and its still looks exactly the same. It is occupied also by someone who is titled it could be in the same family. I am not sure of thier names or titles. I am a local girl and walked past there a few times Am not sure of the address there is still the gatehouse there which I think is rented out and that is on the Furnace road towards the Farriers pub but I think the grounds can also be reached from Sandy road or stradey as I used to take a short cut from these places as a teen where you passed the castle although its more like a stately home type thing but not open to the public as far as I know its still a family home although I havent passed it (its off the road) for about 10 yrs now. You can get a good view of it from the stradey school playing fields. It hasnt changed hardly at all. Hope I have helped

RE: RE: RE: London Evacuation
Greetings David.
I was overjoyed to find an opportunity to contact someone from the Stradey Castle Estate. I have had an interest in Stradey Castle since I was a young boy staring at it in all its glory from the playing feilds of Graig Comprehensive School. I am very eager to view the beauty of the Castle interior and was wandering if there are any available tours or even an open day which will allow me this eagerly awaited insight into this grande structure? Your help would be much appreciated, thank you.
