Searching For The DEVONSHIRE Family
Joseph and Mary Devonshire (nee Neat) lived in a large house in Talygarn, they were both born about 1845. They had 10 children, 4 girls, one of whom was Mary, and 6 boys, one of whom was David, killed in the First World War on 25/12/1914 in France (2nd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards). Another son was George, who survived the First World War. They were my great-great-uncles. One of the girls was married to a Frederick Fletcher. The males could all have been hewers in the mines. I gather there is a home for retired miners in Talygarn. My gran was Winifred Fletcher, born 1908, born in Talygfarn. If anyone has any information, no matter of small be it, of the war memorial, churchyard etc please would you be so kind as to email me at: tizzy1954@hotmail.co.uk It would assist me greatly as I am unable to visit your village personally. Miner
My father was a miner in the Forest of Dean, and spent a number of times in the Tal-y-Garn miners rest home after having a number of accidents, for rehabilitation. It was during the 1940s and early 1950s that he spent there, I would love some pictures from that period of the home.
A History of Brynsadler And Its People
My book on Brynsadler was published in 2008 but is now out of print. Those interested might get a copy from the Community Shop in Pontyclun. The book covers the period from the 1880s up to 1950.
The ATC Hut by The Cinema
I remember breaking and entering on a Friday night in February. Mr Doyle the local policeman rounds us up on Saturday a.m. in his house that doubled as a police station. Father went crazy and ripped up Wales-Australia tickets and threw them on the fire! My family went on holiday in the summer and left me behind with a neighbour. All for a few .22 bullets. I shall not name my co-defendants. This aint my best memory of growing up in my beloved Pontyclun but it's the most vivid. Used to live in Heol y Coed and apart from my criminal activity I regard it as a wonderful childhood. Moved to Cardiff post 11 plus instead of going to Cowbridge and that was a bloody disaster. Visited parts of Ponty 18 months ago and encountered great kindness. Perhaps they never back my racing tips on BBC Wales. I live in St Ives, Cornwall these days and it's beautiful. But it's still not home.

Vauxhall Viva Car
From the picture in 1969 this reminds me of my upbringing in the village. I was born in the village in the house adjoining the Windsor Arms in 1951, and brought up in Heol-y-Coed until I married and moved out of the village in 1975.I now live in Llandaff. Like all teenagers I used to hang around the streets and I notice the Vauxhall Viva car parked in the layby (second from right). I can only remember 1 person with a car like that and if it is the same car then it was owned by Linda Roley from Maesyfelin . Also in the centre of the picture in the distance is the Windsor Arms I referred to.
Working For Charlie Freegard
I lived in Llanharry but most of my unts and uncles lived in Pontyclun. I remember working with Chas Freegard delivering fruit and veg to houses from Pontyclun to Brynsadler, Talygarn Miskin and Hensol Castle. He had a Bedford open back 71/2 ton lorry which he used to park in a smsll warehouse at the bottom end of Lewis Street.
The Keelings, 1940 Evacuees
My sister, Joy, elder brother, Richard and myself, John Keeling, were evacuated to Llanharan in June 1940. After a short time Richard and myself were placed with a lovely old lady at 12 Seymour Avenue, Mrs Surridge. I do believe that Joy was billeted with the local Fish and Chip shop. Since then I have visited twice, the first time with my family, wife and two sons, but for some reason or other I just looked around and didn't talk to anybody. The second time was in the early 1990s. My wife attended a TWG meeting in Cardiff and I came to Llanharan. I drove up to Seymour Ave and saw a man coming out of No 4 or 5, he looked at me and just said "Richard", well, after some 50 odd years that was amazing.
