Nostalgic memories of Alton's local history

Share your own memories of Alton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Straight from school at 17 and a half, I started training at Treloars in 1948. The Managers had managed the transfer to the NHS very efficiently! As Lord Burnham was Chairman of the Board [and also of the Daily Telegraph! ] we we well provided for. I remember that we had a free taxi from the railway station if returning from a day off after dark! The picture shows the Nurses Home. We were under strict discipline, and ...see more
Starting when I was eleven I was a patient over 5 years for three spells, 2 years, 18 months and 9 months with an infected hip joint which became a deep routed abscess. Many different ‘ new’ antibiotics were tried to no effect. In my first spell I was bed bound for 21 months and spent virtually all my time on the terrace, day and night, summer and winter in an effort to get clear the infection. New ...see more
I am trying to find my Grandparents who lived in or around Alton. They were John Power and Martha Power (formerly Martha Brown). My father John Robert Power was born in Alton 18th November 1926 at 7, Tower Street Alton. He unfortunately passed away in 2007, he tried on several occasions to find his parents (John and Martha) without success. He was fostered to a family headed by Edwin George Bann Senior who lived ...see more
I remember "the laughing cat" around 1959/60 when it was a coffee bar, I was a patient at the nearby hospital when on occasion I would pay it a visit with a nurse I was friendly with on her afternoon off where we would hang around and play the jukebox, it was good to get away from the hospital confines for a while. I was a student nurse there from September 1962 until September 1964. I have such happy memories as well as sad ones of my days there. Sister Smith or Slosher Smith as my set called her was indeed a strict person to work under. She reduced me to tears many a time when I would disappear to the sluice and scrub the red rubber draw sheets to keep out of her way. My first Christmas there that year coincided with a really bad snow ...see more
Far left in the foreground, partially shows the sign of "The Laughing Cat" café on Normandy Street....This was my mother's café from approximately 1952 - 1957, back then she was known as Eileen Mumford :)
I started my orthopaedic training at Lord Mayor Treloars in 1950 a two year training. Have just found this site very interesting brought back lots of memories.
I have many memories of LMT for I spent several long periods between 1935 and 1943 as an orthopaedic patient there. I didn't think it as awesome as others have described although I well remember Sister Hadley. I think we could do with sisters like her today for she ran a very strict regime at the hospital ... indeed, she needed to with some of the unruly children, me included. My first ...see more
This is a long shot, but I believe my mum worked at LMT Hospital in the 1950's/60's, she was Edna Pitt although she married in 1961 and became Boettcher. She was an auxiliary nurse I think. Does anyone remember her at all?
