Happy Times

A Memory of Bedfield.

I used to visit Bedfield every summer, and stayed at Joan and Jack Fairweather's house with my mum and brother, Jeremy. The house was one of the council houses just up the road from The Dog pub. We used to go and get a jug of beer for the men; we used to knock on the side window and take the rather heavy jug. The butcher from Fram came twice a week, the baker and he used to have sweets; we happily looked forward to his visits, the fish and chip van also. We would cycle into Earl Soham to the only shop. I remember their son Michael. I went to Bedfield School and was taught in one classroom with children of all ages. I remember Alan Reed and Brenda and Christine, Ian Mayhew, Sandra and Bob and their children - one was called Barry, Auntie Doll and Grandad Fairweather, Monica - every one knew every one and it was a happy place. Uncle Jack used to work on a pig farm, the name escapes me, and at harvest time we used to go and take his tea to him in the fields. I was from London and these times were the happiest times of my life. I now live in the West Country near a farm with a ditch over the road and tractors going up and down the road - it reminds me so much of Bedfield, but no where will ever be quite the same to me as Bedfield. How I wish I could revisit and see how it is now. A special place with very special people who have sadly passed away now, their memory will stay in my heart always.
