Joseph Askew

A Memory of Bolton Upon Dearne.

My Great Grandad Joseph Askew came to Bolton-upon-Dearne around 1876 from Lincolnshire . He worked at the newly opened Wath Main Colliery (where there is now a Golf Course) On doing my family tree I found out the he and his wife Sarah had 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls. They lived in the old Ladycroft Terraced houses across from the Collingwood Pub in a 2 up 2 down house. (Makes me wonder how they managed) He had part of his elbow shot off in a shooting accident and couldn't work down the mine anymore so he became a Potter selling pots and pans using his horse and cart to travel around the area. Late in his life he swept the pavments around the old Bolton-upon-Dearne village. He died age 80 a few weeks after he finished this work. A lot of his offspring are spread all over the world. America, Australia, Florida, Canada and Chile. Through doing my Family Tree I have been fortunate enough to meet and visit some of these relatives.
