The Coombs Family From Kent Approz 1921 1935

A Memory of Bolton Upon Dearne.

My dad, lived with his family in Bolton upon Dearne from the age of about 3yrs in 1921. They were (like many others) very poor. My grandad, Frank Coombs (who my dad is named for) and my nan, Henrietta (Hetti) with children Margaret (peggy), Nell, Frank, Sid moved for work in the flour mill. The two younger children were born in Bolton upon Dearne, they were Nelson (Nip) and Rose. They were schooled in the local school. My Grandad died in 1924 leaving Hetti with 6 children to care for. I believe she took in washing. They lived at 5 The Crescent until he died and then moved to 12 Edna Street. Dad aged 14yrs went down the main colliery at Barnbrough until he returned his family south when he was approx 17 or 18 yrs old. Peggy married Ernie Rogers, a local man from Bolton upon Dearne, they also moved south to Redhill, Surrey.
I did visit Bolton upon Dearne and was made very welcome, along with my mum and sister, Julia. Grandad Frank Coombs was buried at the local cemetary.
If anyone reading this has any info, I really would be very pleased to hear from them. For example, the mill Grandad worked at? Flour Mill? Do you live in one of the two addresses? Can I access any school records of the family? Records of the Mine? Any memories you may be able to share would be well received. I Thank you for reading. Helen Higgins
