The 50s And 60s

A Memory of Bramhall.

I lived with my parents,  Ralph and Joan, "Bindy" and sister Judy,  on Birchway, off Ack Lane East, then we moved to 17 Atholl Road.  There were several families with children who my sister and I  spent a lot of time with - Johnny Catlow at the top of the road,  Elizabeth in the house opposite, Robert and his sister up the road,  and others whose names fail me!!  There were fields and ponds to the top right of the road where we used to play before they were built on.
We used to go sledging at Benja Fold in the village (especially 1962/63) and to Bramall Park and Lyme Park.   There used to be a petrol station and smithy at the bottom of Woodford Road just before the main junction in the centre of the village, with a bank next to it.  We used the toy shop on Moss Lane ("Buntys" I think!!)  regularly - Lego, Airfix kits, Action Men!! etc. I also seem to remember a cinema was on Woodford Road?
I did a paper round from one of the newsagents by the junction, next to which was the butchers.  Just about remember the Victoria pub before it was demolished (what year?)   where shops now stand.   There was also the pet shop on Bramhall Lane south where we bought our tortoise!   And of course buying fireworks at the newsagents, especially bangers and rip raps! Lumb Lane recreation ground was also the kids and teens hang out area.
About 1960/62,  we moved to the big house at the top of Maple Road, which became Andrews estate agents, and where unfortunately we have sad memories when our mum died in 1963, when I was 11. From there we lived on Moss Lane next to the large house where a photographer lived - opposite to the chip shop,  another hang out area!  My future stepmum lived in a flat above the bakers at the bottom of Woodford road, with her two children, she later worked at a small fashion shop near the bakers.
Moved to Bridle Road, Woodford in 1965.  Many happy memories of both villages and cycle rides!!  Our schools were Greenbank, Moseley Hall Grammar (now gone)  and Hazel Grove Sec Mod.
I left the area in 1970 to work in Southampton, but still visit the area - how much it has changed!

Hi. Searched on Buntys for my memory story and found this! I lived in Bramhall until I went to uni in 1968. I know it’s 14 years on since you wrote this but I could fill in some gaps. My husband, same age as me(born 1949) went to Moseley Hall. Margaret
I have lovely memories of Bramhall village, yes the toy shop was called Bunty's and had the symbol of a rabbit on it, I remember every xmas the owner we all knew as Mr Bunty would fill the toy shop window with a meccano fairground and I would stand there mouth agog watching it going around (ferris wheel, merry go round, and something else but I can't remember now) we lived in Burford Avenue just off Glendene Avenue, and my grandpa and grandma lived at 12 Sydal rd, I was so sad to see the doctors house on the corner of sydal being pulled down and replaced with the Barclays bank which is now closed a few months ago, we have just put mums house up for sale on Burford it's heartbreaking in way but we need the money to pay for mums care in a home in the village.
