Catford Broadway
A Memory of Catford.
My father used to take me to the Sunday market in the Broadway where they sold day old fluffy yellow chicks! I never got one despite my begging. Also remember the linen shop called Pecrys where the money whizzed around the ceiling to a central cashier. Change was delivered back to the sales assistant by the same system of wires and pulleys. Along Rushey Green was a fishshop ....maybe Tutts? My mother used to buy live eels which were difficult to wrap in newspaper because they were wriggling all over the place! Also on this main road was an ice cream parlour Marcantonios? Does anyone remember "Haircuts" pet shop in an old house on a corner further along Rushey Green? Presumably he did haircuts as well as sell animals.

i worked in tutts in the early 60,s as a saturday boy and in my holidays until they shut in 1968 and we were all transfered to the new caters supermarket fish dept
I went to the nursery school at the top of Plassey Rd, next to the milk yard and later went to Rushey Green school on Plassey Rd. It was it's final year before it was closed and then opened up on Culverly Rd, so that must be sometime in the early '70's.
I was prompted to write because the fish counter was mentioned in Caters. I used to walk through there with my nan and there was that wonderful smell of smoked Haddock. I clearly remember saying to her that when I grow up I'm going to work here. I think she gave me an odd look and I recall my mum laughing when she told her. Of course, I never did and the now old precinct opened.
Bought a B&W kitten, got it home and Mother had a fright because the kitten was smothered in fleas.
Quick dust down with flea powder and a bright eyed grew into a good companion.
