A Memory Of Claverdon Post Office

A Memory of Claverdon.

I remember this post office & stores being run by a nice couple - Mr & Mrs Simons. I think she may have been Welsh, as she used to call us children "deeeya" for "dear".

A dear old man, Mr Wilsden lived in a cottage very near to the post office. He was the village's Road Man & spent most of his time tidying verges & clearing road drainage & ditches. His dog Jackie followed him around & in very cold weather could be found huddled under sacking in Mr Wilsden's wheelbarrow, with just his face showing. Mr Wilsden died in his sleep, in his armchair - Nice way to go.

I was brought up in Park Drive & lived there 1953 - 1968.

Mr and Mrs Simonds were my grandparents. They were my mums parents but unfortuanatley both died in 1976 before I was born. My Mum (Gillian Simonds) tells me that it was her mother who found Mr Willsden in his chair that day.
Betty Simonds came from Birmingham not Wales (geographically not that far!!)
My mum has spoken fondly of the post office at Claverdon and has pointed out which was her bedroom and where the sorting office was. How lovely that people remember her parents! x
I spent 3 weeks at Cherry Pool Farm in 1958.It was managed, perhaps mis managed by a Mr Stubbins. It was owned by Mr Seccombe of Slumberland. It certainly lost money as too much was done.Mr S spent his time yelling at everybody and boasting of what he had done, which was negligible.I liked the local pub but was glad to get away.
Thanks for that note about Mr & Mrs Simonds. They were very kind to us children & Mrs Simonds had an interesting way of saying "dear"- "deeeeah" !
With regards to Cherry Pool Farm. :
In my teens I had cause to pay a rare visit to the doctor's surgery in Henley in Arden. Looking at my medical records, Dr Gunn said "You're supposed to be dead ". It transpired that obviously some records had got mixed up & a boy much younger than me had tragically drowned at Cherry Pool Farm ('50s) We shared the same name/surname !
(I have commented on this before but the message has disappeared.) I remember your mum and grandparents very clearly in the 1950s. Jill and I attended Claverdon Junior and Infant school near the Green and I remember visiting her home to play - very different seeing the back of the house compared with the post office and general store at the front. I was sorry to learn that your grandparents passed away at what must have been a fairly early age but hope your mum is fine and in good spirits. Ricky Gunn
