Cleethorpes Zoo

A Memory of Cleethorpes.

I believe the elephant in the picture was named Tanya. I have fond memories of the zoo as my father Dave Mosley moved us from Derby to Cleethorpes in 1965 as he was employed by the zoo to do some building work, we as kids used to get to pet the animals, my favourite memory must be of stroking Calypso the killer whale.

I remember visiting the zoo often as we had a bungalow on Fitties camp. My cousin Yvonne once give Tanya the elephant some food, not sure if it was hay, but the elephant grabbed the food and also lifted our Yvonne up feet of the floor, it was a picture to see her face. On another visit to Cleethorpes zoo I remember looking over the wall down at the rhino, and my Dad lifted me up and daggled me over the wall laughing, me screaming, it wasn't funny at the time, but we had laughs through the years laughing at my expence laughing about it! hehehe... :-)
It is no surprise your cousin was lifted off her feet as Tanya was a bit of a minx, our friend also had a bad run in with her whilst doing his work experience at the zoo, he was tasked with mucking her out and feeding her and all was well until one particular day she decided to pin him into a corner,no one knew why and she didnt do it again , she was just showing him whos boss i suppose,ha.
Our first home was a caravan on the fitties, happy days..
I was named after this elephant 36 years ago.....
