The Day I Crashed Into The Sports Master's Car

A Memory of Corby.

This brings back the very vivid memory of me cycling into the bottom of the driveway and heading straight into the Sports Master's car (whose name eludes me!) and ending up on his bonnet, needless to say he was not amused! I was banned from cycling thereafter! I attended Corby Grammar when it was newly opened, and was taught Latin by Colin Dexter - a wonderful tutor. I was in 5 Shell in my last year, and remember Virginia Goodings, Janet Chant, Valerie Stockburn, Reginald Chick, Mo Thornton and others. I wonder where they all are now? I also remember being interviewed for a BBC programme by a Scottish reporter Fyfe Robertson, I think he was called. He commented on my very modern bouffant hairdo! I also remember the freezing cold water of the swimming pool, and did my best to avoid swimming lesson -, needless to say I never learned to swim, I was put off for life!

I was one of the 1st pupils to go to the new Grammar School in 1955. I cannot remember the Sport's Master's name but remember Mr. Hill, Mr. Dilkes, Mr Holmes [who I met at the 50th reunion of our year] Sadly he died shortly after but both he and Mr Bott brought their memories. We saved up for the swimming pool and it opened the year after I left!! I'd never have gone into it as I knew it would be very cold. We were taken to Kettering Baths [outside ones] by Bus. I fell ill and had to give up all Sport. I didn't miss the swimming ones though! We took our two grandsons for a tour of where our family had lived. They weren't impressed but the school has been completely rebuilt. My 13 year old grandson was awe struck! All glass and steel. Not my taste :) I remember Fyfe Robinson but he would have visited after I left in 1960.
Like a lot of his “teeny fans” - I used to be in love with Mo Thornton so your “memory “ made me smile. In today’s language he would have been called “COOL”
If you’re reading this Mo - hope you’re smiling too !
