Wix Road, Dagenham, Essex

A Memory of Dagenham.

Lived in 2 Wix Road, Becontree, Dagenham until I was 23 from 1951 to 1974. My mum still lives there. Did anyone else out there live nearby? I have fond memories. People were lovely. No complications. Summers were summers and autumn was conker time. Winter was snowballs, and Guy Fawkes Night was amazing. You would make your own guy from an old shirt, trousers sewn together and stuffed with newspaper and put a cheap mask over an old stocking filled with paper for the head and stand outside Becontree station asking for 'A penny for the guy'. I went to Campbell Primary School where I was the top goalscorer and took our team to the final, got beaten by Manor School 2-1. I scored our goal, it was a great moment. There was a large crowd. Dagenham was such a beautiful place in those years, I have such beautifull memories. Had great mates to play with in the street.Hop scotch, hide and seek. We would make our own billy carts from pram wheels. I became a 'mod' and had my own Vespa, it was the love of my life. I Want It All Back Please.

Hi Martin
I remember you as the younger brother of Geoff Hayward? He and I were in the same class at Cambell Primary and we played together in several local football teams, all this between about 1956 to 1966? Last I heard was Geoff had moved from Dagenham, and I have lived in Devon since 1981. Im retired now. Good to know you are still around, yes they were nicer days then I feel. I recall your house on the corner of Wix and Goresbrook roads, my aunt lived about 50 yards from you on Goresbrook and I have been to your house as a youngster? Geoff and I knew Alan Hayes who also lived near you? John Wyatt also? All the best, give my bext wishes to Geoff. Regards from John Davey from Amesbury Road

Central Park is one of the rare places in the Beacontee Heath area of Dagenham that hasn't changed too much. I lived at our family home at 9 Brendon Road from 1952 until 1976 and attended Beacontee Heath infant/junior school near the Civic Centre then Triptons Secondary School in Wood Lane which is now part of Robert Clack Tech. We could walk safely to/from school throughout our school years. I spent countless hours playing golf and tennis at Central Park plus football and cricket on the Robert Clack school fields until it was too dark or the school caretaker made us leave ! Very happy days indeed growing up in that area.
