Growing Up In Dartmouth

A Memory of Dartmouth.

Hi my name is Dave Brock and I was born in 1942 in Dartmouth! Having done my schooling I joined the Army Cadets in my early teens and found music in the cadet band! We played at most of the carnivals in the area including the Dartmouth carnival, which in those days had a big procession with lots of floats and us playing 'happy wanderer' over and over as it was our best and only tune! Our band leader was Maggy Hamlin and the cadet leader was Ted Shucker. Then in 1959 we set up a rock band. Me and my mate, Bob Bacon, got together with Dave Owen, Derek Tucker, Terry Wilson & Mike Floyd and started to play Rock & Roll. We practiced in the band room in the market square & hired the Southford School rooms & played to ever increasing audiences. We started off as 'The Tiepins' but changed to 'The Saphires'. As we got better known we began to appear all over the west country at various venues & in support to some of the stars of the time; The Springfields, The Batchelors, Sounds Incorporated and Kenny Ball, also soon to become stars like Paul Raven (to become Gary Glitter). Bunny Tucker left us to become a pro and Derek Millman joined us. We had various singers like; Steve Weston, Brian More, Paul Destiny & Paul Rivers, to name but a few! Sadly, both Derek & Dave have passed away. We broke up in 1964 to end 5 years of great and very happy memories of a time when everything was new and had to be tried! I now live in Sussex but Dartmouth will allways be home!
