Newton Le Willows Grammar School In Wartime

A Memory of Earlestown.

Joined the school in 1939 in 3A. I remember Miss Peters, a Cambridge graduate, who taught English, Mr Pidcott who taught Maths, Mr. Goody History. It was a very happy school. I still see Favel Harrison and her brother Michael. When the siren sounded we went into the air raid shelter until the all-clear. I was in the chorus of the Gondoliers. My best friend was Jean Wild. She was bridesmaid at my wedding and a wonderful friend. I remember Annie's lovely cooking. I wish I had her Ginger Pudding recipe. Among the unforgettable pupils were Nora Dickinson and Marion Casey. There were some great boys, Alan Jackson and John Hindley and Peter Unsworth who always owned up when he was in trouble. Happy memories!

Ted Goody was still there when I left the school in 1960. I was in the Gondoliers too but not the same production as you, 1956 or 57 it would have been.
I attended Newton Grammar in 1953 while we lived at RAF Croft transit camp following our return from Aden. It was my ninth school as like many Service families we moved every couple of years as my father was posted.

Gilbert & Sullivan was popular at Newtown, when I arrived the hall was set up for HMS Pinafore.

I cannot say my memories are happy as for most teachers the arrival of a new boy halfway through term was inconvenient, and some said so. The exception was Latin teacher J A Morris, who gave me extra lessons at lunchtime and during breaks. His generosity gave me a flying start when we moved to Scotland and I joined Madras College in St. Andrews.
