Growing Up In East Ham

A Memory of East Ham.

We moved to East Ham from Bow when I was about 3 years old. I lived in Clements Road  there was Mum and Dad, Nan and Grandad and my brother. I went to Lathom School, where I met my first love. I also remember Mr Cordwell and Miss Gardener, teachers at Lathom, popular rumours were they were cousins, I also seem to remember they also smoked in the classroom but could be mistaken as the memory does play tricks at times.

I spent lots of time over at the 'Reck', also on the train bridge watching the steam trains passing underneath. Also remember jumping on a bus to go to Wanstead Flats and going to Wanstead Park. My Uncle Ernie was a bus conductor so the bus rides were free. Also Plashet Park and the East Ham Boxing Club bring back fond memories.

Sometimes we went to the Town Hall to have a swim in the  baths, there was a small pool for little 'uns and the big pool for everyone else, complete with 3 diving boards, which you could do bombs from.

My dad had an allotment at Beckton right by the level crossing, I remember pushing the cart full of veggies from the allotment back home, what a walk!

I remember the High Street with the fruit & veg shop, the off licence, M&S, the Black Lion pub where I used to drink at 15, the Denmark pub, the big Co-op opposite the town hall and of course the ice cream shop, just on the corner of Burgess Road and the taxi yard by the side of East Ham station. A little further along was Caters, the shop where the ham was cut from the bone, and at the time there were so many exotic goodies, then we come to the market where I had on various occasions had 3 Saturday jobs, one with the Snow Brothers butchers at the top of the road leading to the market, the next at the toy shop at left past the Cafe in the market and the last at the butcher facing you as you entered the market, it was called Newhams.

Such happy times!

I also remember Miss Gardner and Miss Comerford, Mr Allen, Mrs Jones, and Miss Ford. thank you for sharing your memories.
Just found this site and its full of memories I'd forgotten about. I remember Miss Gardner / Miss Comerford / Mr Cordon and Miss Ford who was my favourite. I was well into sports and she was the best. Was at Latham Jnrs from 1957 before going on to Burgess Manor.
I went to Lathom Road in 1950s, remember Mr Cordon, Miss Comerford, who taught me the recorder and Miss Gardner, Miss Ford. My teacher was a Mrs Jones. There was also a Mr & Mrs Beagle, who were sports teachers. Mrs Beagle did work at Burges Manor as well when I went there. Love to hear from any other pupils. Lived in East Ham for 16 years, in Springfield Road.
I was born in number 158 Burgess road in East Ham in 1964, the tail end of a great era. I went to Altmore Avenue School and then to Lathom before move to Becontree area, like a lot of eastenders did in the day. The only teacher I vaguely remember was a Mr. least or something like that. I loved the swimming baths going with my cousin's Elaine and Isabel and getting chips on the way back near the town hall. Also the Wimpy where we would get a Knickerbocker glory. Lovely memories for me before I hit the real world of responsibilities and greed. I sometimes visit the old area to see how things change, no more C&A on the corner, no more large COOP, the Granada cinema gone and the old Wavy Line shop on the Barking High road which my parents run.
I would have been at Latham when you were there but don't recall your name. I am currently writing a book about that whole era but had forgotten many of the names. Mis Ford, yes, loved her, remember her face - or think I do - but had forgotten her name. Cheers, Marty Still
It's lovely reading all your memories Derek and everyone, it's helped me remember things about those days. I started infants school in 1954, I don't remember much about those days or my teacher's names but my 1st year Junior School teacher was Miss Lopez, she was lovely, 2nd year Miss Gardener, I really didn't like her, then Mr Lobb, he was ok but I do remember him throwing chalk at the boys. My favourite was Mr Slipper in my 4th year. Do you remember the headmistress, Miss Chapman, she was horrible. She taught us handwriting and we weren't allowed to put any loops as we wrote, there were slapped legs if we did, I was scared stiff of her when I was 7.
