Growing Up In Eltham

A Memory of Eltham.

I lived at 6 Eltham High Street, my dad ran the off licence there.  Every morning before school or the shop opened he would take me to the swimming baths. I went to Roper Street school until I was 10.  We moved to Canada in 1973, I still think about Eltham quite often.  I loved it there.

During 60's to mid 70's lived in Greenway in Eltham. Would walk up the hill - or get the number 21 bus if I was flush. Would do the rounds of the pubs from the Carpenters Arms, up as far as the Rising Sun. Remember Hinds of Eltham, Burton's the tailors where I got my first suit and overcoat on tick. Think there was an old fashioned barbers doorway next to Burton's. I remember Showell's toy shop up from the arcade (with real model toys many made in the UK!). The arcade from memory was just down from the Fire Station and there was drapery/hardware store in the arcade that sold all sorts of stuff. Haven't been there for years. Sadly I don't think I would recognise too much now by the sounds of things.
I grew up in Eltham, such happy memories. Not far from Eltham Palace, until we were bombed out. Evacuated to Wales. Went back to Eltham and lived there until I married in 1954. Then lived at Lee. Came to Canada in 1967, but have been “ home” many times, always making a quick visit to Eltham, my it has changed now though.
