Nostalgic memories of Farnham's local history

Share your own memories of Farnham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

So many memories of Farnham. Although I was born in Aldershot much of our shopping was done in Farnham. I recall the joys of the Christmas card display in a basement below the stationers that was under the colonnade. My first dancing class was held in the practice room of the Castle theatre - always we liked to dance to the Skaters waltz. We danced at garden parties around the town and once at some special show in ...see more
I was drafted from Cranleigh swimming pool in 1971 when the operation of the pool was taken over by Waverly Council. The pool was quite run down and in the winter of 1971 Waverly Council managed to allocate funds to refurb the pools. My input was to reduce the depth of the original Victorian pool to 1metre all over, thus making good for learners. The main pool was completely skinned with concrete using a ...see more
I was born in Farnham, actually Lavender Cottage, Rowledge, a nursing home I believe, in 1944 and my family lived at Thorndhu (now no. 8 I think) Broomleaf Road backing onto the railway line. My mother and brother lived there during the Second World War and an air raid shelter was built in the back garden. I now live in Montreal, Canada. My father, born in 1909, resided in his youth at Hillside Cottage, Compton - but ...see more
I was born in Frensham, but moved to Farnham when aged about 5 yrs. My father was a master Taylor (Lee) & had his business at No.15 Downing Street, as did his father before him - it is now an Estate Agents. I went to St Polycarps school, then Elmsleigh, the later situated near Farnham station. Following schooling I went into nursing, obtaining my SRN & RSCN qualifications. I married in 1959 & we had two sons. ...see more
My mother went to St Polycarps school from 1913 to 1914. The address I was able to find from the schools archives where they lived was firstly at Beech Villas, Park Rd, Farnham and then Figgs Yard, Long Garden Walk. I would dearly love information on Figgs Yard and if known, some photos of both addresses. Before I knew about Figgs yard I went down to Farnham and found Park Road but alas the property was ...see more
My great grandfather, Edwin Clarke, lived and worked here until his death in 1950. He was a fishmonger for over 50 years. I have written a book called 37 Downing Street - A Farnham family saga. It is about Edwin and his family and is based on actual events. It is packed with interesting, historical facts about Farnham.
I note that the traffic was still two-way at this time. I also note the coach stopped opposite the cleaners, a few yards down from Woolworths, the Royal Blue used to stop here, en route from the Coast to London. Left Farnham in 1967. Now reside in Florida.
Born in Aldershot in 1939 my father worked for a builder in Farnborough, Chuter, and eventually moved to a rented house on Folly Hill. I initially went to St Polycarp but moved to Elmsleigh where both myself and my sister stayed for a few years. Wondered if there are any of the old pupils still in the Farnham. I was lucky to pass an exam and went on the the Guildford Junior Technical School in 1952 ...see more
Hi my name is Noreen and I lived in Farnham for quite a few years. I was actually born in Ash. As you go past the library, from the town centre, there used to be a private school called St Christopher, where I worked for a good few years. I started as washer up but progressed to main chef. Sadly the school closed in 1999. I had many happy memories of Farnham and working there.
My great aunt Carrie (Wills) was born in Farnham and lived at No1 Bratton Villas all her life.  Her father worked as a carriage upholsterer and all the children were born in the house, which was a small 2/3 bedroomed terrace.  When I was a child we always visited to watch the airshow.  She had a range and a scullery and an outside toilet, and also a tin bath that hung on the outside wall.  The front room was only used to ...see more
