Grays High Street
A Memory of Grays.
I remember the High St and Joys (or Joyces) on the corner - I remember in the shop they had little money boxes that ran on wires to a cashier! Very old fashioned store with little drawers with stockings and other things in I remember. I remember the old market, it was a funny sort of walk around shape, I also remember a lovely cafe milk bar called Bastiani's and opposite the lovely local baker shop, of which there were many in the area, Gregory's. My nan lived in Rosedale Road and there was a little shop down the road that Gregory's delivered to and she would send me for a farmhouse loaf. I also remember the Old High Street, which had an art shop in a kind of Dutch house I think, not sure now. The High St back then was very differnt to now, I recently went back and it was all 99p stores, take aways and nail bars! There was a nice old toy shop as well in New Road (?) always went there after a dentist visit.
