The Candy Store Prestongate
A Memory of Hessle.
My grandmother ran the candy store on Prestongate for many years. Many happy memories. There was Audreys next door and Pillings TV rental on the corner.

Also used to have my hair cut in Carlin's the barber, early mid 50's. Mrs Carlin was a teacher at Hessle C of E.
I always remember that barbers when I smell Brylcreme!
Also in Prestongate, Browns the butcher, had a licensed abattoir around the back I recall. Susan Brown went to Hessle C of E.
Top house was spit and sawdust, old men in the back room with dogs under benches.
Ridsdale and Walker had a coal yard halfway down on the right of the picture.
Used to get Sunday papers from a private house, halfway down on the left of the picture.
Wow all this off the top of my head after 50+ years.
Live in London now.

I spent many a happy day as a child living and playing in Hessle
and down by the river.I was married in All Saint church in the sixties and have now lived in Spain for over 30 years.
My grandmother would never have believed all the changes there have been in my life and the village. Susan
