Hoghton Tower, set on a hill and visible for miles, dates from 1565. King James I beggared the Hoghtons by overstaying on a visit with all his retainers. On 17 August 1617, having enjoyed his meal in the banqueting hall the king knighted a loin of beef, playfully announcing 'Rise, Sir Loin'. Tradition says that the long drive from the road to the top of the hill was covered with a welcoming carpet. In the 18th century, the village of Hoghton was a centre of handloom weaving, and the almost derelict Hoghton Tower was let as tenements; but it is now well restored and popular with tourists, many from abroad.

I am trying to find old photographs of my house which is the former school in Hoghton...Holy Trinity.The school was converted to a house in the early Eighties.I would love to see how the building looked as a school...perhaps if you were a pupil or lived in the village you might have some old snaps tucked away in a cupboard? I would really love to see them.Many thanks.
I spent many a Saturday, walking the woods of the tower, beating sticks and making noise. After a good 8 hours trudging up and down slopes and in the mud, they feed us a bowl of bad stew and beer. There was always a joke about who got the only piece of meat. I was the lucky recipient once, had to eat it quick tho.
