Shoes

A Memory of Hounslow.

In the '50s and '60s we lived at the 'bottom' end of Hanworth Road, near the Crematorium, so most of our shopping was done either in Feltham, or more locally "up at the Mount". (The shops by the Rex cinema).
When it came to clothes shopping though, especially shoes, we always went to Hounslow.
Every other shop in Hounslow was a shoe shop (literally!).
After Saturday morning pictures Mum used to drag us up one side of the High Street and down the other, going into every shoe shop, trying on dozens (so it seemed) of different school shoes until we got some in the first shop we started in!
I remember, if we didn't whinge too much, we got a packet of crisps each (with the little blue salt) and sat outside Henekeys, half way down the High Street, while Mum went in for a bottle of Dairymaid.
