Cleveland Road School

A Memory of Ilford.

I remember Mrs Strachan in 1947/48 when she came down from the Cleveland Road Junior School after Miss Butcher left rather unexpectedly. I also went to Woodlands Infants School from Easter 1945, I was 5 in January, and in September transfered to Cleveland Infants. After Cleveland School I went to Loxford Secondary Modern School which meant I had to Walk a long way to school as I lived just 4 door away in Rutland Road.
I also remember the Market where we bought our weekly shop from, I think it was called Whites in the furthest entrance from the Broadway.
Oposite the market was a small row of shops which housed a Horse Butchers and Terry's Bookshop.

Hi Raymond
All of what you say I can remember, although 10 years yor junior and visited Room at the Top on a number of occasions for special dinners with my wife's cousin in the late 70's early 80's, something to do with Goodmays Infants and Junior School. do you still live in the area, i live in Southend
I must be about the same age as the first writer. I started Cleveland Road school in 1945 I believe. My first teacher was Miss Ludlow. I remember Miss Butcher but not Mrs Strachan. There was a Miss Jones and the top class in the junior school was Miss Combes. The head teacher in the girls section was Miss Blake. I left in 1951 and I'm in contact with two others who were at the school. My mother also shopped sometimes at the pioneer market. I remember Harrison Gibsons and we won our first lounge suite there in the 1964 sale. We camped overnight and they gave us the suite which was marked nine guineas.
