More about this scene

This magnificent stone bridge was built in the early 1800s to replace another that was washed away in the floods of 1797. It was designed by the celebrated engineer John Rennie, and is a smaller-scale version of the Waterloo Bridge in London that he designed later. The scene here of the Kelso and the flowing River Tweed may look peaceful enough, but in the 1850s the townspeople rioted violently, protesting against the level of tolls.
