More about this scene

This is one of Lancaster's establishments which was allowed a Royal connection. Lancaster Royal Grammar School was founded in 1235, and in 1472 it was endowed by one John Gardyner. It moved to the site we see here on East Road in 1891, just before our photograph was taken.

Memories of Lancaster, the Grammar School 1891

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Lancaster, The Grammar School 1891

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Between 1948 and 1956 these buildings were used to house a children's home. My aunt, Helena Pratt, was the matron and ran this along with her husband Noel. Does anyone have memories of this?
This is the Old Building, showing the Headmaster's house, and boarding house. The teaching part, "Big School" is hidden by the tree. The New Building was built across the road. The School has now expanded enormously, and is co-educational! Not when I was there!
