My Memories

A Memory of Meidrim.

Memories for Meidrim 1943 and 1957.

Evacuee 1943

Yes me and my brother was evacuees from London in 1943. We arrived in Carmarthen and were lead to the cattle market - all we had was a box with a gas mask in it. There was a label on our coat with our name and our address on it .
There were lots of other children there too. Some were crying, it was very frighting because we did not know anybody. As I was the eldest I held my brother's and sisters' hand as our mother had told us to .
My brother and I were picked out by a lady with gray hair - her name was Mrs Morris. She said she could take my brother and I, but did not have room for my sisters. I said mummy said we must stay together ,but soon we were parted. We were taken to the mill on Meidrim common, it was getting dark and we were shown our bed room and fell asleep .
Next day we got up and had something to eat and were told our sisters were on
a farm not far from here, Mrs Morris would take us to see them soon. We walked to the farm to see them. The farm had cows on it and they were happy there so I felt a lot better knowing they were all right. Doreen and Nora stayed with Mr & Mrs Morgan .
Back at the mill we began to find our way around. The mill had a large wheel on the side of it and inside had large stones that was used to grind corn to make flour. The mill was old and did not work any more so we had lots of room to play - around the mill and out-buildings .
Mr Morris had a garden behind the out-buildings where he grew vegetables - he was always catching rabbits that got into his garden to eat his vegetables.
There was a footpath with a footbridge across the river that led to a paper and sweet shop. I used to walk there and back to the mill.
